UNITED STATESv PATENT OFFICE.
FERGUS KELLY, OF BIRMINGHAM, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE OSBORNE & CHEESMAN COMPANY, OF CONNECTICUT.
v CAST-OFF FOR SUSPENDER-BUCKLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,528, dated January 14, 1890.
Application filed April 11, 1889- Serial No. 306,761. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, FERGUS KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cast-Offs for Suspender- Buokles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of devices by which the ends of suspenders are detachably connected to the buckles; and the purpose thereof is to provide a light, strong, durable, and convenient cast-off attachment having an eye or loop to which the suspenderends are connected and a housing entirely inclosing an actuating-spring, by which the said housing is thrown outward against the point of the hook to close the same.
It is my purpose, also, to so construct and combine the parts that the buckle may be attached to and detached from the cast-01f by the movement of the buckle itself without fingering the device by which the hook is closed.
The invention consists in the several novel features of construction and. new combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the parts separated.
In the said drawing, the reference-n umeral 1 designates a metallic plate of suitable length and width, having at one end an eye or loop 2, which receives thesuspender-ends, and at the other end curved or bent to form a hook 3.
Upon the sides of the plate 1, nearthe eye or loop 2, are formed lateral extensions or lugs 4, which are bent at right angles with the plate and into substantial parallelism with each other. These lugs form a support for a pivot-pin 5, upon which is mounted a housing 6, composed of a metal plate having.
the plate is slightly prolonged beyond the ends of the side pieces 7, and is bent inward and inclined to lie at an angle with the point of the hook and form an opening through which the ring or bar of the buckle may be forced. At its lower end, also, the body portion of the plate 6 is prolonged and bent inward at an angle to the plate Where it lies between or upon the ends of the side pieces 7, so as to glide or slip over any roughness which it would be likely to encounter.
Upon the pivot-pin is coileda spring 9, one end of which presses against the body of the plate 1, while the other bears upon the metal of the hook, thereby throwing the housing outward to close the latter.
This cast-oii is light and strong and can be produced at small expense, since the parts are struck from sheet metal by dies. The spring is wholly inclosed and concealed and there are no points or edges to catch, tear, or cut the clothing. The Suspender-buckle may be attached and detached by simply pressing it between the housing and the point of the hook, thus avoiding the necessity of a finger-piece to finger and move the housing for disengaging the buckle from the cast-off.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- Y A cast-off for Suspender-buckles, ,consisting of a plate having a buckle-retaining hook at one end and an eye or loop at the opposite end and provided at its edges with side lugs, a housing comprising side flanges pivoted to the lugs between the hook and eye or In testimonywhereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FERGUS KELLY.
