CHAIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,189, dated January 14, 1890.
Application filed May l0, 1389. Serial No. 310,219. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. EDGE, of Newark, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented an Improved Chain, of which the following is a speciication.
The object of my invention is the production of a tubular elastic chain; and the invention consists in the novel details of improvement that will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a chain constructed according to my invention, part of the chain being drawn out and partially unwound, so as to show the manner of constructing the same. Fig. 2 is anenlarged detail sectional view taken on theline c c, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is an end view ot' my improved chain; and Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of a modification.
In constructing my improved chain I form two spirally-arranged wires a l), that are interlooped, as clearly indicated in the lel:`t hand part of Fig. 1 and in Fig. 2. By this means the wires ab may have a lateral movement upon each other, as indicated by the ar# rows in Fig. 1; but cannot be disconnected, as shown in said ligure. After the double coil A is made, as above indicated, I form a tubular length of chain B by winding the double coilA in a spiral, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 4. I also wind around the tubular length ll of chain a spiral band D, of suitable metals that comes between the meeting edges of the coils a l), as indicated in Fig. 1.
The wires a l) of the double coil A, I secure to the band D as follows: I secure one edge of the wire o. at d. to the band D on one side and the wire l), I secure similarly on the opposite side to the band D at e, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2. By this means when the chain is drawn upon the wire a., that is connected to one side of' the band D, will be pulled to some extent away from the wire l), connected to the other side of the band Dand as the two wires a b are interlocked they cannot become separated, but a longitudinal movement is permitted to the chain. This construction of chain will be found very strong and durable, while a spring-tension is given to the chain on account of the spiral arrangement of the double coil A and band D, which tends to draw the spirals together.
It is evident that the chain may be made without using the band D to connect the coils a l). This construction is shown in Figs. et and 5, wherein the meeting edges of the wires a and D of the double coil A are soldered together at f, meaning that every right-hand end of every coil a is soldered or otherwise secured to the nearest left-hand end of coil l).
Having now described my invention, what I claim is- 1. As `an improved article of manufacture, a chain constructed of interlooped coils a l), said coils a l) on their meeting edges being alternately connected together, as specilied.
2. The double coil A, formed of the interlooped coils a l), combined with the spiral band D, placed between the coils, the edge of the coil a being secured to the band D at one side and the edge of the coil b being secured to the band D at the opposite side thereof, substantially as described.
