UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY D. PURSELII, OF IVASHINGTON COURT-HOUSE, OHIO.
G RAT E-FRONT,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,064, dated January '7, 1890.
Application tiled June l, 1889. Serial No. 312,867. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY D. PURsELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Iashingto'n Court-House, in the county of Fayette and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grate- Fronts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in summer-grate fronts.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap and efficient covering for a grate-opening, which can be readily inserted in or removed from position, and which is adapted t0 be Areadily changed to different-sized grateopenings, so that when placed inside of the grate a tight joint is formed to prevent soot and dirt from being blown into the room.
The invention consists in the features of construct-ion hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is an inside front elevation of my improvement. Fig. i is a section on line .96:11, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of the adjustable catch. Y Fig. e is an enlarged crosssection,
A represents a board of sufficientl size to cover the grate-opening.
B represents cleats, which are formed of two angle-pieces united by initier-joints, leavinga sufficient space between the upper ends to allow the working of the catch. These cleats are secured to the board A by means of metallic straps O, which are preferably gained into the cleats B and rigidly secured thereto, and then attached to the front A by means of screws I). These screws can be readily taken out and the angle-cleats adjusted in or out to suit the diiferentsized grate-openings.
.E represents a packing, which is preferably felt, sheet rubber-cloth, or other flexible material, which projects out over the cleats B a sufficient distance to form a packing-joint both upon the inside of the board and the edges of the cleats, thus effeetually closing the grate-aperture by the packing-joint. This packing prevents soot and dirt from being blown out into the room. In order to secure this in position and prevent. it from coming out or in, I provide adjustable catch F, which is attached to the stem G of the knob Il by means of the set-screw I. Catch F can be adjusted up or down on the spindle'Ga desired distance to engage with the frame of the grate. The catch F is turned by the button lfI to lock the frame in position.
Having described Iny invention, what I Claim isl. A grate-front consisting of the board A, the angle-pieces B, extending along and secured to the side and the top edge portions of the board, and the flexible packing-strips E secured to the faces of the angle-pieces to form a packing-joint both against the inside of the board and along the edges of the angie-pieces, substantially as described.
2. A grate-front consisting of the board A,
the angle-pieces B, extending along the side and top edge portions of the board, the strips O, secured to the anglepieces projecting therefrom and attached to the board, and the fiexible packing-strips E, secured to the faces of the angle-pieces to form a packing-joint both against the inside of the board and along the edges of the an gie-pieces, substantially' as described.
3. A grate-front consisting of the board A, the angle-pieces B, extending along and adjustably secured t0 the side and top edge portions of the board and terminating at a distance from eachother at the top edge portion, a rotating catch F, located between the adjacent ends of the top portions of the angle-pieces, and the flexible packing-strips E, attached to the faces of the angle-pieees to form a packing-joint both against the inner side of the board and along the edges of the angle-pieces, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
HARRY D. PURSELL.
