Description

(No Model.)
W. o. WILLIAMS an A. W. THOMSON.
COPY HOLDER.
Patented Jan. 7, 1.890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM C. WILLIAMS AND ARCHIBALD W. THOMSON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
`COPY-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,026, dated January 7, 1890.
Application filed september 30,1889. seria No. 325,585. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that We, WILLIAM C. WIL- LIAMs and ARCHIBALD W. THOMSON, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy-Holders; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in copy-holders; and it consists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures l and 2 are respectively front and rear elevations, the former showing` the book open. Figs. 3 and 4 are edge views.
A represents the body of the holder, the saine consisting usually of a rectangular piece of deal board, card-board, or other suitable material, of such size as Will accommodate stenographers7 or other note-books B. Holder A is provided with a rubber band CL at the top for securing the book by passing the back cover of the bool; under the band. The holder is also provided with two rubber bands o a', embracing the edges thereof for holding the so-called liner C. This liner is, in the main, cylindrical, with annular grooves c near the ends for engaging bands a', and thus holding the liner in place, the tension of these bands holding the liner on the page and the liner being moved up and down the page by rolling it with the lingers.
D is a wire bail that serves as a prop to hold the device in an upright position when sitting, for instance, on a table, this bail being secured to the edges of the holder` by small eye-screws a2. From thence the ends of the wire extend'rearward, as shown at d,
and from thence extend inward, as shown at d', and from thence extend downward past the fnlcrum, as shown at d2, and from thence the wire returns outward7 as shown at d3.
The members d and (Z3, by respectively engaging the holder, serve as stops to limit the movement of the bail in either direction, the bail When closed being in line with the holder, and when open diverging suiiiciently to serve as a prop to support the holder. The book and Aholder are convenientto carry in the pocket; or the holder Inay be made to stand upright on a table supporting the open bool; for copying. The device Will be found simple, convenient, and inexpensive.
Vhen the holder is laid down on its back, in which position of parts the bail will of course be folded against the holder, member CZ stands away from the holder far enough to elevate the farther end of the holder, thus giving the latter suitable inclination as will render it convenient to Write upon.
The holder may be of suitable size to hold letter-heads as Well as a book, and, if desired, a 'quantity of letter-heads may be held in place underneath the note-book.
l. A copy-holder having an elastic band at the top for securing a note-book, elastic bands at the sides, and a liner, the latter being cylindrical in shape and held in place by the elastic bands at the sides, substantially as set forth.
2. In a copy-holder, in combination with an elastic band at the top, elastic bands at the sides, cylindrical liner held in place by the side bands, and a bail pivoted to the holder,
the bail having lateral members on either side of the fulcrum of the bail for limiting the movement of the bail in either direction, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we sign this 'specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this 25th day of June, 1889.
VILLIAM C. VILLIAMS. ARCHIBALD IV. THOMSON.
Witnesses:
