O. HUPFMAN. BARBED FENCE.
No. 418,617. Patented Dec. 31, 1889.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORLANDO HUFFMAN, OF FRIEND, NEBRASKA, ASSIGNOR ONE-HALF TO JAMES LARSEN, PETER O. LARSEN, GEORGE'DEINAS, AND NIOHOLAUS DEINAs, ALL or SAME PLACE.
BARBED FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part-of Letters Patent` No. 418,617, dated December 81, 1889.
Application filed October 17, 1889. lSerial No. 327,261. (No model.)
.To @ZZ whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ORLANDO I-IUFFMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Friend, in the county of Saline and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbed Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such -as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tov make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in barb-wire for fencing; and it consists in the employment of two lengt-hs or strands of wire, one or both being polygonal or rectangular in cross-section and provided with barbs,
which are secured thereto, said barbs projecting in one direction only from the wires 'in approximately a common plane, so that when thecables are attached to posts the barbs will point downwardly therefrom, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of afence constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail side view of a part of one lof the cables and attached barbs. Figs. 3 and 4 are rsectional views on the lines x ncand'yy of Fig. 2.
In my priorpatent, dated April 3,1888, No. 380,57 3, IV have described and claimed as an improvement in barbed fences a two-strand cable with 'barbs andfence constructed therefrom, as will appear more `fully by reference to said patent; and in carrying out my present invention the invention claimed in said patentforms anessential part of the improvement.`
In the prior patent the cables or strands of wire are round, and the barbs which are attac'hed thereto are liable to twist or turn, so that their points would extend in different directions, thereby defeating the object of the invention. To obviate this difficulty and ,more securely attach the barbs in place, I now make either one orboth of the wires B B with fiat sides, around which one end of the barb 5o C is twisted, so as to not only secure the barb rigidly in position, but also hold the cables together. The barbs O have both their ends pointed, which points are provided by cutting the wire which forms the barb at an angle, 55 and the point c projects downwardly from the cables or wires B B when in place, while the opposite end c is bent so as to lie against one of the sides of the cable, so as not to eX- tend beyond the same. The barbs are either 6o secured to the wires by twisting them around both the cables or wires B B, as shown in j Fig. 3, or by passing the projecting end between and partially around the lower cable,
as shown in Fig. 4:.v By providing a cable 65 with flat sides or polygonal or rectangular in cross-section the barbs can be more securely attached thereto. This style of fencing can be constructed of round wires, which can 'be flattened after the barbs are secured 7o thereto by passing the wires with theA barbs thereon through rollers having depressions in which the barbs will lie, so that the cables will be flattened throughout their whole length and the coils or turns of the barbs 75 pressed upon and into the wires B B.
I am aware that per se it is not broadly new to combine barbs with one wire which is polygonal or four-sided in cross-section, and do not claim such as my invention; but
VVhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improvement in barb-wire fencing herein described, consisting in the combination of two cables, which are polygonal or fiat- 8 5 tened in cross-section, and barbs secured thereto at intervals, so as to hold the cables one above the other, said'barbs having but one projecting end, which extends downward from the cables, substantially as shown, and 9o for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of witnesses.
ORLANDO HUFFMAN.
