H. J. GOOHT. STICK 0R HANDLE HOLDER FOR BROOMS, m.
Patented Dec. 24, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMANN JULIUS GOOHT, OF FREIBERG, SAXONY, GERMANY.
STICK OR HANDLE HOLDER FOR BROOMS, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 418,009, dated December 24, 1889.
Application filed November 26, 1887. SerialNo. 256,271. (No model-l Patented in Germany January 15, 1887, No. 40,278.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN JULIUS GOCHT, of Freiberg, in the Kingdom of Saxony and German Empire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stick or Handle Holders for Brooms, Brushes and the like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, no patents being obtained by me anywhere for this invention save in Germany, No. 40,27 8, dated January 15, 1887.
This invention relates to a handle-holder for brooms, brushes, &c., which allows the angle of the brush in relation to the handle to be altered at pleasure.
Figures 1 to 3 relate to one mode of carrying out this c0ntrivance. Fig. 1 shows a side View; Fig. 2, a front View, and Fig. 3 a plan of the same.
The handle-holder consists of a socket A, composed of two parts a and a, (which receive the handle,) and the adjusting part B, Fig. 1, fixed on the broom or brush. The socket A and the adjusting part B are connected together by means of a rivet or screw 19,011 which they can turn. Both parts a and a are provided in the lower part with three or several corresponding holes 0, bored at equal distances from the center of rotation. These holes can be. made to coincide with a hole bored in the adjusting part B. When the required degree of inclination of the handle of the brush has been obtained bybringing a set of holes in A in coincidence with that in B, a pin is introduced through the three coinciding holes, for the purpose of securing A against B. In this construction a narrow strip of iron f, bent in the shape of an S, is fixed by means of bolt g and nut h to the brush, so that both the holder B and socket A can turn round said bolt 9 and be set at any angle to the brush 0. Both parts a and a of socket A can be pressed together by means of ring 19 and set-screw g. To prevent pin 6 being lost, it is provided with a small chain r, fixed to the socket A.
If this construction described in the foregoing be applied to a broom, it can be set and used in vertical, oblique, and horizontal directions. As the handle-holder is arranged to turn, the whole sweeping-surface can easily be used behind stoves, under pieces of furniture, in corners and crevices, cornices, and cupboards. Consequently brushes and brooms can be employed in all directions. The cleaning of outside of windows from the inside of a building has also become possible. It is no longer necessary, either, to use the mode of I What I claim, and desire to secure by Let- V ters Patent of the United States, is
A handle-holder for brooms and brushes, consisting of the parts a and a, constituting the socket A, and of the brush-holder B, made of a bent strip of iron plate connected to the socket A by a rivet or pin 19, the holder B being fixed to the broom or to the wood of thebrush by means of a bolt 9, round which both can also turn, said holder B being further provided on its upper end with openings 0, which correspond with openings 0 bored in the lower part of the handle-socket, and allowing, by means of a pin 6, the handle to be secured at any angle of inclination to the broom as practice may require, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
I-IERMANN JULIUS GOOl-IT. Witnesses:
HEINRICH RAUDE, FRIEDRICH Osonorz.
