' UNITED STATES PATENT Urrrca EUGENE HARMON, OF RIPPEY, IOWVA.
HALTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,638, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed July 18, 1889. Serial No. 317,925. (No model.)
T aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EUGENE HARMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rip-v pey, in the county of Greene and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Halter, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to halters; and it has for its obj eat to construct a halter which shall be simple and durable, the ends of the straps of which shall be journaled without stitching or riveting, and which shall be capable of being adjusted to various sizes without cutting the straps of which it is composed.
With these ends in view the invention consists, mainly, in the improved construction of the connecting-pieces and buckles and the method of joining the straps, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The buckle which is used in connection with my improved halter is composed of an approximately horizontal frame 1, having a cross-bar 2 lying below the level of the end bars 3 3 of said frame, and having'the pivoted tongue 4, which is of the usual construction. Direct-1y in rear of the cross-bar 2 the frame 1 is provided with an additional crossbar 5, the purpose of which will be presently explained.
The frame which I use for connecting the straps of which the halter is composed at their points of intersection is composed of a rectangular body 6, provided near its ends with cross-bars 7 7, lying below the level of the end bars of said frame, and connected in turn by a longitudinal bar 8, having an upwardly-extending pin or stud 9. One of the cross-bars 7 is likewise provided with an upwardly-extending pin or stud 10. The under sides of the side bars 11 of the rectangular frame or body 6 have recesses 12, to accommodate the strap, which is to pass transversely through the said frame.
The halter is composed of the nose-strap 13, the cheek-straps l4 14, one of which is extended so as to form the head-strap 15, the throat-latch 16, and the throat-strap 17, which connects the throat-latch with the nose-strap. One end of the nose-strap is looped around the cross-bar 5 of one of the buckles, and the ends of said strap are then passed transversely through one of the frames 6, and pro- "vided with perforations 18, adjusted upon the stud 9 of said frame. The long end of the nose strap is likewise passed transversely through a frame 6, and provided with several perforations 19, by means of which the nosestrap is connected adj ustably with the said frame. The free end of the nose-strap may then be connected with the buckle mounted in the loop at its opposite end. The lower ends of the cheek-straps are now passed longitudinally through the frames 6 6, attached to the nose-strap, preferably below the outer sides of said nose-strap, and the projecting ends of said cheek-straps are folded back between the lower ends of the frames 6 and the adjacent cross-bars 7, and provided with perforations adjusted upon the pins or studs 10- of said cross-bars. Additional frames 6 6 are adjusted upon the upper ends of the cheekstraps, which are connected in like manner with the ends of the throat-latch, and the end of the short cheek-strap is doubled upon itself or looped over the cross-bar 5 of a buckle, which is thus attached to the said cheek-strap and ready to be connected with the extended end or head-strap of the opposite cheek-strap. The throat-strap 17 has a ring 20 suitably attached to its lower end and encircling the nose-strap, and the upper end of said nose-strap is looped around and permanently attached to the throat-latch.
As will be seen from the foregoing description, the straps composing my improved halter are connected by means of the herein-described connecting-frames without the use of stitching or riveting, and the buckles are likewise connected to the said straps by means of the cross-bars 5, without necessity for cutting and thereby weakening the straps. It is obvious that by properly adjusting the straps in their respective frames they may be adjusted to any desired size without necessity for cutting the straps, and thus preventing the possibility of the halter being again enlarged.
The construction of the device is simple and inexpensive, and the halter embodying my improvements will be found to be useful and efiicient.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters. Patent, 1s-
The herein described halter, comprising the nose-strap, the eheelestraps, one of which is ext-ended so as to form the head-strap, the throat-latch, and the throat strap, the connecting frames mounted upon the cheekstraps at the intersection of the latter with the nose-strap and with the throat-lateh, said connecting-frames eomprisingeach a rectangular body (3, provided near its ends with cross-bars 7 7, lying below the end bars of said frame and connected by a longitudinal bar 8, having ontWardly-extending pins or studs f) 10, and the buckles connecting, respectively, the ends of. the two cheek-straps and the two ends of the nose-strap, each of said buckles being provided with a cross-bar 5 in rear of the crossbar 2, having the pivoted tongue Tl, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto allixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EUGENE HARMON.
