UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. GOODWIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
M EC HAN ICAL TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,637, dated December 17, 1889.
' Application filed April 19, 1889. Serial No. 307,6 53. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, JOHN A. Goonwm,
a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, re-
siding at New York, county and State of New Y ork, have invented a new and useful Mechanical Toy, of which the following is a specification.
My said toyconsists, essentially, of a board or plane surface havin perpendicular sides and extending across it a fence or partition provided with an opening or openings, a spring-propelled catapult which may be made to represent the moving part of a figure or animal, while the fixed part may be permanently attached to or 'be simply pivoted on the board, and, finally, a ball or missile intended, when struck by the said lever or catapult, to be projected through such opening or openings. The ball or missile may be either tethered to the board or left loose.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, the figure therein shown represents a perspective view of the toy, the broken lines representing the lever, catapult, animal, or figure in its extended or discharged position, and the thick lines in their pulled-back position ready for striking.
1 represents a board, which may have the rectangular form shown or have a circular or other form. Said board has marginal sides or rails 2, and i's'at one part crossed by a fence 3, which has one or more. openings or passage-ways 4 for the transit of a ball or missile 5, preferably of spherical shape.
6 is a lever or catapult, representing in this case the hind portion of a donkey, which may be of wood, and which is pivoted to the board 1 at 7, and is limited to the prescribed vibration by a projection S, which traverses a slot 9 in the board, or by any suitable means. The catapult is drawn to the projected position (see dotted lines 10) by a spring such as an india-rubber band 11 secured to projection 8 and a part of the board, and is capable of being caught and held at the retracted position shown in the strong lines of the figure by a catch or trigger 12, whose spring 13 retracts it against a stop 14.
The catapult in the drawing herewith represents the hind part of an animal-say a donkeywhose front part is printed or painted upon the board. The ball 5 is preferably tethered or moored to .the board by a piece of thread or an india-rubber thong 13.
The herein-described form of my invention is susceptible of various modifications, which are included. For example, a spiral or other metallic spring may be substituted for the rubber band. The lever or catapult may be made to repres n t other animals or figures. Other part pyprts-auch as the ears, eye, or under jaw may be movable, and the ball or missile may be attached to the toy by a string or elastic connection.
The parts 8, 9, 11, 12, 18, and ll are .shown by dotted lines only.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and ,desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a mechanical toy, the combination of a plane surface with a representation of a partly-fixed and partly-movable animal or figure, the movable part being pivoted to the fixed part and controlled by a spring, a ball or missile, and an upright partition or fence, an opening or openings or recesses provided in said partition or fence or in the plane surface or board, the whole so arranged that on pulling back the movable portion of the figure or animal and releasing the same the spring will swing it forward and strike the ball or missile, if in the correct position, into or through the said opening or openings or recesses.
2. In a mechanical toy, the combination of a plane surface having the representation of the fore part of an animal, and pivoted thereto the hind part of said animal, said hind part forming a striker, a spring for retaining the hind part in its elevated or projected position, and a fence attached to the plane surface and provided with an opening, all the parts being so arranged that when the hind portion of the animal is withdrawn and then discharged it will swing around and strike a ball or other missile that may be in its path. JOHN A. GOODWIN.
