NOSE RING FORVHOGS.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARTIN WILLEMAN, OF RIDGEVILLECORNERS, OHIO.
NOSE-RING FOR HOGS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 417,616, dated December 17, 1889. Application filed May 1, 1889. Serial No- 309,1'79.- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, MARTIN WILLEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ridgeville Corners, in the county of Henry and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nose-Rings for Hogs; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and
, exact description of the invention, such as will injuriously its health The invention'will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hogs nose with my invention applied; Fig. 2, a detail perspective View of the plate and rings, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of a modification.
In the drawings, A represents a hogs nose, the snout of which contains a congeries of very sensitive nerves. If the latter are lacerated or injured by any foreign substance passing through the snout, the health of the animal is seriously impaired. In order to obviate this, I use the plate P, with an opening 5 19, through which the snout A may slightly protrude. This plate is also provided with an opposite pair of holes 19' p ateach end thereof, for the reception of fastening-rings C D, which are old and well known to the public. These rings are first inserted with the points upward, and are then turned over and forced, by means of a pair of pinchers or ringers, into the gristle on each side of the snout.
I sometimes make a skeleton frame, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, with the open pointed rings integral with two bars, which pass across the nose transversely and not longitudinally, as described in Patent No. 216,468.
I am aware that a nose-piece has been described in the old patent, No.154:,046, as made of wire in one'piece, the pointed ends being forced up through the nostrils and carried under a cross-arm which presses on the snout, but this makes the snout sore and sickens the animal.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
I. A metallic nose-piece having a longitudinal slot for receiving the upper portion of the snout of a hog, and provided at each of its four corners with a sharp flexible prong, whereby it may be secured in place, as described.
2. The nose-plate P, havingthe snout-hole p and holes 1) p,in combination with fastening-rings, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN WILLEMAN. WVitnesses:
A. RUPPERT, PHILIP MAURO.
