To all 10700171, it may concern:
Beit known that I, ORLANDO KELSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blackwood, in Camden county, New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Generators, of which invention the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the sectional steam-generator for which Letters Patent No. 335,134 were granted to me February 2,1886.
It consists, essentially, first, of a compartment steam-drum connected by pipes with the several individual sections composing the body of the generator, in combination with a regenerator located in the crown of the furnace; second, in the combination, with the body of the generator, of an auxiliary generator herein termed a steam developer.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the complete generator and inclosing masonry, front wall removed; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the generator, omitting the masonry; Fig. 3, a sectional elevation of the steam-developer; Fig. 4, a side and Fig. 5 an end elevation of the steam-drum; Figs. 6 and '7, sections of the drum, the former on the line m and the latter on the line y y of Fig. 5. Fig. 8 is a plan of the Y-pipes used for connecting the steam manifold pipes with the steam-drum at both ends of the drum.
I have modified the form of the individual sections described in my said patent with the view of locating the regenerating-pipe in the crown of the furnace. I now give the sections the form indicated in Fig. 1, wherein a represents the upright tubes, 1) the upper cross-tubes, and c the lower cross-tubes. To save piping, the tubes 1) are extended outside the masonry and connected with the steammanifolds d d, which are in turn, by pipes c e and Y-pipes c 6 connected with the drum h at its opposite ends. The lower cross-tubes c of each section are curved to form a neck and loop, as shown in Fig. 1, so that when the several sections are placed in position side by side there is formed a recess g for support ing the regenerator g in the crown of the furnace. The relative proportions of the regenerator remain the same as described in my said patent.
h represents the drum, to the shell of which is given the form outlined in Fig. 5, with the view of increasing the area of its heating-surface. The interior of the drum is divided into three compartments 7t 7t2 h communieating by openings 71 7&5 71
2' and j represent manifolds through which water is supplied to the apparatus. They are placed directly below the legs of the sections, as shown in Figs. 1 and2, and they act also as mud-drums to the sections, any sediment collecting in them being readily blown out through pipe 7..
Z and Z represent steam-developers, each consisting of an exterior pipe m, Fig. 3, through the capped or otherwise closed ends of which passes a pipe n. This pipe is connected with the Water-supply, as shown, and is provided with the small slots or holes 0, opening into the steam-space p, which is connected by open pipes g at each end of the developer with the steam-pipes c 6, leading to the drum h. The steam-developers H are extended through the sections above the cross-pipes c in order to give the greater compactness to the apparatus. They may, however, be located in the furnace below the crosspipes c and supported by fire-brick brackets or hangers, their essential conditions being that they shall be below the water-line of the generator, and that the steam-spaces shall be connected at each end to the drum h by open pipes or passages for the delivery of the steam generated in them.

The steam generatedin the several sections passes into the manifolds (l d, thence through pipes c e e 6 into the top compartment h'of the drum, thence down through the opening into compartment m, where its more watery portions are deposited, the steam passing on down through the opening 7L into compartment 7L3, thence by opening 77. to and through the regenerator g, and thence to the delivery-pipe 0'. The developers Z Z being situated below the water-level maintained in the sections, are at the start full of water, which is by the action of the furnace heat soon expelled, passing up through the pipes 1 into compartment 7L2 of the drum,
whence it is led back through the pipe 5 into the Water-manifold or into an y of the sections of the generator. Sufficient Water to supply the developers Z Z enters the steam-space 1) through the small slots 0 of the inner or feed pipe or, and is rapidly converted into steam, which has a free exit through the pipes 1 into the pipes e e, and enters the drum along with the steam generated in the sections. In this Way I am enabled to generate with rapidity and safety a large amount of steam with a comparatively small consumption of fuel.
A single developer or any desired number can be used.
I claim 1. A steam-generator composed of several sections, each consisting of upright pipes a and cross-pipes b e, of which the lower pipe 0 is curved to form a recess g in the crown of the furnace, a drum h, divided into three communicating compartmentsfllhe steam-pipes connecting said sections with drum h, the regenerator g, located in the recess g, and the condensation-pipe s, in combination, substantially as set forth.
2. In combination, a steam-generator consisting of several sections,a steam-drum 72, divided into three communicating compartments, steam-pipes uniting said generator and drum, one or more steam-developers Z, open pipes q, connecting the steam-space p of each developer with the drum h, and a pipe 3 for conveying Water and condensed steam away from the drum, substantially as set forth.
