UNITED STATES PATENT EFICE.
HENRY ll. BRANDES, OF OORYDON, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES F. SULLENGER, OF SAME PLACE.
WHIFFLETREE.
SPE CIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,224, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed September l0, 1889. Serial No. 323,530. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY H. BRANDES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corydon, in the county of Henderson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful lVhiiiietree, of which the following is a specification.
The invent-ion relates to whiffletrees.
The object of the present invention is to provide a whifietree of simpleand inexpensive construction adapted to be attached to vehicles to enable an animal to start with a light or heavy load or an empty vehicle wit-hout experiencing any sudden strain, and to prevent the jars to animals incident to passing over rough surfaces.
The invention consists in the construct-ion and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying` drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a whiffietree constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view ofthe plate that carries the conical spring Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the whiifletree.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A designates a whiffletree of ordinary construction, which is provided on its rear face with a fiat spring B,which is attached thereto intermediate of its ends by a metal band C, that passes around the whiiiiet-ree and the spring and is provided with a perforation c', which also extends through the whifetrce and receives the pin that couples the saine to a tongue, a doubletree, or the crossbar of a pair of shafts. The ends b of the iiat spring are bent back upon themselves and around Jins or bolts D,wl1ich pass through .perfora ions in the side of draft-clips E. When a load is started, the spring B will give and will enable the strain to be slowly commu nicated to the animal to prevent any sudden jars; and in orderto enable this result to be produced should the load be light or heavy,
the conical spiral springs F are interposed between the ends of the iiat spring and the whiiiietree. The conical springs are secured to plates f, which are attached to the rear face tions f, which prevent the sides of the draft- 5 5 clip, which are arranged upon the top and bottom of the whitfletree, from swinging out beyond the ends of the latter.
Conical rubber buffers G are secured to the said plate f within the conical spiral spring- 6o rods F, and when the vehicle is passing over rough and uneven ground they receive the jars incident to such passage and prevent any sudden strains upon the horse.
In order to regulate the pressure of the springs, a series of registering perforations d are provided in the sides of the clip E,which enable the pin to be adjusted nearer or farther from the conical spring F and the whifiietree.
The whiiiietree is provided with hooks H, to which are connected the stay-chains, and the clips which secure the hooks in place also serve to fasten the inner end of the plate f, to which the conical springs and buffers are attached.
From the foregoing description and the accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will readily be understood.
Having thus described my invention, whatl claim isl. The combination of the whiffietree, the spring B, secured thereto intermediate ol its ends, the draft-clips attached to the end of j ections f at their outer ends to prevent the draft-clip swinging out beyond the ends of the whifiietree, the conical spiral springs secured to the plates f and interposed between the whiiiletree and then ends of the spring B, and the conical buffers arranged within the springs, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the whifietree, the Hat spring secured thereto, the draft-clips provided with a series of perforations, the bolts D, securing the ends of the spring B to the clips, and the conical spiral springs interposed between the whifiietree and the ends of the spring B, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the whiftletree, the
the spring B, the plates F, provided with pro- IOC spring B, secured intermediate of its ends to said Whifiletree, the draft-clips attached to the end' of the spring, and the rubber buffers arranged Within the springs, siibstantially as described.
4. The combination'of the whiffletrec, the spring secured thereto intermediate of its ends, the draft-clips attached to the end of the spring, and the conical rubber buffers interposed between the whifetree and thc spring, substantially as specified.
5. The combination of the Whifflet-ree, the spring B, attached to the rear thereof, the
draft-clips secured to the ends of the spring,
my own I have hereto affixed my signature in zo presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY H. BRANDES. Titnessesz OLLIE S. LAWRENCE, HENRY H. KING.
