UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERASTUS J. WHITE, OF LOCKE, NEW YORK.
WHIFFLETREE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 250,609, dated December 6, 1881. Application filed August 27, 1881: (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ERAsTUs J. *WHITE of Locke, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented certain new and usefulImprovementsinWhiftletrees; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specication.
Figure l is a plan view of my improved whiiietree. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a front view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the gures.
This invention relates to whiftletrees and it,
consists in certain improvements in the construction ofthe same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a lat plate or bar, which may be the cross-bar of apair of thills, at or nearthe ends of which the ends of a lat slightly-curved spring, B, are secured by means of bolts O, passing through eyes D at the ends of said spring, the curve of which is in a rearward direction.
Secured by means of a bolt, E, to the center of spring B is another flat curved spring, F, provided at the ends with suitably constructed trace-hooks G. Each of the springs may be constructed of asingle or of a series of plates, the latter being preferable, in order to insure strength and elasticity.
H isa spring-rod, the ends of which are secured upon the bolts C, and which is provided or formed with acentrally-located eye, I, which serves as a means of attachment when the device is to be used as or in connect-ion with a double-tree.
J J are guard-loops pivoted upon the bolts C, to prevent the traces from slipping oft'.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. It is simple, light, inexpensive, and by its elasticity contributes much to easy riding. It also greatly relieves the horse of the shock caused by sudden starts. By a slight and easily apparent change the device may be advantageously applied as a neckoke. y Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States- 1. A whiftletree consisting of two ilat curved springs bolted `together centrally, one of said springs having its ends bolted to a rigid bar, and the other being provided at the ends with suitable trace-hooks, substantially as shown and specified.
2. As an improvement in whit'tletrees, the combination of the springs B F, the bar A, the rod H, having eye I, and the guard-loops J, all arranged and operating substantially as herein described, for the purpose shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ERASTUS J. WHITE.
