UNITED STATES PATENT O FICE.
ZENJAMIN F. SIVIF'I,.OF TIPTON, INDIANA.
PORTABLE WORM -FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,205, dated December 10, 1889.
Application filed June '7, 1889- Serial No. 313,527. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: much as the abutting ends of the panels are 55 Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. SWIFT, of
diana, have invented certain new and usef ul Improvements in Portable \Yorm-Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, i reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
My invention relates to the construction of portable worm-fences; and it consists in improved devices for jointing, connecting, and
bracing the several panels thereof, as will be understood from the following description.
In the drawings, Figure l is a top view of three and part of four panels of a fence constructed upon my plan. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view of one panel thereof disconnected from the others. Fig. at is an enlarged detail View of the adjacent ends of two panels, showing the angular joint.
In detail, the panels consist of upright posts p, united together by one or two boards b be low and a wire to above, though more or less wires or boards may be used than those shown without departing from the principle of my invention, provided that at or about the center sufficient width of material is used to allow for the insertion of the pins over which the ends of the horizontal braces lock. The panels are intended to be set one at an angle with the adjacent one, so that the fence, when completed, belongs to that class known as worm -fences, and for this purpose the ends of the boards I) are beveled in opposite directions to conform to the angle of the edge of the posts ),in the manner shown in Fig. 4, so that when brought together a snug joint will be made by the beveled ends of the boards abutting against the straight edges of the posts, and the joints are then looked together by means of links I, bent in the shape shown in Fig. 1, the hooks or eyes of the links looking over pins 2, driven into the panels for that purpose. About midway of the central board or strip is set a pin 1, and after the panels have been jointed and locked together by the links and wires braces w are passed from the center of one panel to the center of the next, their ends looking over the pins 1 in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and this completes the construction, inaslocked together by the links Z and their cen- Tipton, county of Tipton and State of Inters by the braces U", making the whole structure solid and firm.
For ordinary use it is not necessary to drive in stakes or posts into the ground; but in exposed situations, where high winds are prevalent, it may sometimes be necessary to secure the fence by crossstakes or similar means.
My invention, however, consists in the construction of a fence in the manner shown in the drawings, and it will be found adapted to a variety of purposes, being readily taken down and as readily set up, and when the panels are locked in position by the links and braces it will be found strong enough to stand.in all ordinary weathers and under all ordinary circumstances.
\Vhat I claim as my invention. and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following, Viz: V
1. A portable wormfence consisting of two or more panels, composed of posts 13, connected by a wire at the top and two or more boards below, the adjacent ends of each panel havin g an angular face adapted to abut against each other for forming a snug joint, such posts being on opposite sides with regard to each other, so that the beveled edge of the board is adapted to fit against the end of the post, such panels connected at their centers by angular links Z, looking over pins 2, fixed in each panel, substantially as shown and described.
2. A portable worm-fence comprising two or more panels, the ends of adjacent pan els abutting against each other and forming an angular joint, the beveled end of the boards upon one panel abutting against the edge of the post on the adjacent panel, the joints locked by means of angular links hooked over pins connected to such panels, and the whole structure further secured by horizontal braces passing from the center of one panel to the center of the next. one, substantially as shown and described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 3d day of June, 1889.
BENJAMIN F. SWIFT. \Vitnesses:
O. P. J AcoBs, E. B'. GRIFFITH.
