COMBINED STORM-COAT AND VEHICLE-APRONL SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,028, datedDecember 10, 1889. Application filed September 9, 1889. Serial No. 323,376. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SOHOOLER C. HORN, of Bladensburg, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Storm-Coat and Vehicle-Apron Combined, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention has for its object the production of a garment or article which shall effectually protect the clothes or person of the driver or other occupant of a buggy or other like vehicle from rain, snow, mud, and wind; and it consists in a combined storm-coat and vehicle-apron, with special attachments for connecting it with the dash-board, and with specially-constructed sleeves for the arms and hands of the wearer, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 represents a perspective View, as seen from the front, of the improved article before being applied to the person of the wearer, a portion of one of the sleeves being broken away. Fig. 2 is a View in perspective of the same as seen from its back and when open. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the dashboard of a vehicle in part, with the apron portion of the garment as secured thereon or thereover; and Fig. at is a View in perspective of a modified construction of the hook used to secure the apron portion of the garment to the dash-board.

The garment or article is made of any suitable water-proof material with or withoutlining, including the body and sleeves. The body A is made open behind throughoutits length, fastening about the neck or upper portion of the person, as by buttons or otherwise, and is of a length to take in the whole person, and when in use to reach to or over the dash-board of the buggy. It thus presents a close front,

and its lower half or portion 1) constitutes, when extended to or over the dash-board of the vehicle, a buggy or vehicle apron. The sleeves of the garment are each composed of an upper and lower section B B, arranged to telescope one into the other at a point or place between the elbow and shoulder, and the lower part of the sleeve B, which is extended and constructed to form a glove or mitten, is attached to the upper sleeve-section B by longitudinally-arranged elastic cords or straps c, united at their ends, as by sewing and hookand-eye fastenings d, or otherwise, to the two sleeve-sections B B. This construction of the sleeves provides for their adjustment to any length of arm, and as when the garment is in use that portion of the arm between the elbow and shoulder is seldom or never raised above a horizontal position rain or snow will not penetrate at the junction of the two sleevesections, and by the construction of the sleeve as described full protection is given to the arms, wrists, and hands, while the remainder of the person, from the neck downward, is similarly protected by the body of the garment or article against cold and bad weather.

The main body A of the garment is made in one continuous piece, and, as hereinbefore described, of a length to reach from the neck down to and over the dash-board Got the vehicle, its portion 1;, which forms the vehicleapron, lapping over the dash-board and being secured to it by sliding spring-hooks D, attached to the apron portion 1), thereby giving the person absolute protection against any kind of storm or bad weather, wind, and mud. The spring-hooks or fastenings D are secured to the apron portion (2 by eyes or staples e, riv eted securely to said apron portion at a sufficient distance from the lower or outer end of the combined garment and vehicle apron to allow of the portion 11 lapping over the dash-board, as shown in Fig. 3, and of being secured thereon by the spring fastenings or hooks D, regardless of the width of the dashboard, and doing away with the inconvenience and expense of making perforations in the apron, as usual in other storm-aprons.

The spring-hooks D are made with a slotted shank portion f, which passes freely through the eyes or staples e. To attach the apron portion Z) to the dash-board, its end is first thrown over said board, bringing the eyes 6, through which the hooks slide, to or over the top of the dash-board, and the hooks being raised to their fullest extent in the eyes e. The apron portion 1) is then drawn down on the inside of the dash-board until the hooks catch over said board, after which the finger is applied to the top of the hooks and the latter pushed down firmly over or on the top of the dash-board, thereby clamping the apron portion b to its place on the board. To detach the apron portion 1) from the dash-board, it is only necessary to give an upward stroke to the hooks.

Fig. 4 of the drawings shows a modified construction of the hooks-that is to say, it shows a hook D,made of wire, doubled or bent; to form two slotted shanks f, which pass through two staples or eyes 6, secured to the apron portion of the garment.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I 1. As a new article of manufacture, a vehicle-apron provided with telescoping sleeves having elastic connections connecting them with the apron, substantially as set forth.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a vehicle-apron provided on its outer side above its lower edge with clamps having a sliding connection with the apron in the direction of the length of said apron, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with the vehicle-apron, of eyes secured thereto and hook-shaped clamps provided with shanks sliding through said eyes, substantially as set .forth.

4:. The combination, with the vehicle-apron, of eyes secured thereto and hook-shaped clamps provided with looped or slotted sh ankssliding through said eyes, substantially as set forth.

5. In a storm-protector, the combination, with the body of the article, having a neckfastening at its upper end and short sleevesections B B, of the sleeve-sections B B, extending into the sections B, and having mittens or gloves at their lower ends and elastic strands c, secured to the inner ends of the sections B and to the body, substantially as set forth.

6. In a combined storm-coat and vehicleapron, the combination, with the body part A, made open in the rear and closing above about the person and of a length to form a vehicleapron portion 19, of the sleeves constructed of upper and lower telescoping sections B B, united with each other by longitudinal elastic connections, and with the lower section B constructed to form a glove or mitten cover for the hand, essentially as described.
