COMBINED PHOTOGRAPHIC AND CARD FILE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL H. HoWD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, Passaic county, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Photographicand Card Files, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

The object of my invention is aphotographic and card file of new construction, wherein the individual holders of the file are arranged independently of each other, and wherein the holders are adapted to hold the photographs and cards placed therein beyond the possibility of their escaping therefrom.

The invention consists of devices that are illustrated in the accompanying drawings,

which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the file, in which figure the file is open and locked in such position as to display the cards or pictures therein. Fig. 2 shows the file in the position shown in Fig. 1, the cards or pictures being removed in the last-mentioned figure; and Fig. 3 shows in perspective the parts in open position.

A represents a photograph or card file, having a flexible carrying-belt B, which belt is adapted to. support and carry the several connecting-loops C, that are arranged separately and ind ependent of each other thereon, as shown. e

The belt B, which may be rubber, leather, or other flexible material or substance, is provided with a hook K at one end of the same and a corresponding eye H at the other end, which hook and eye are adapted to fasten the file in open position to show the cards or pictures G placed therein, as in Fig. 1.

.The loops C, any practical number of which maybe placed upon the carrying-belt to be carried thereby with the holder D and card or picture G of their own connection in the operation of opening and closing of the file, are made of wire of any suitable kind, and are made to conform to the shape of the belt and to fit nicely thereon, which construction of the loop holds the same in suitable position on the carrying-belt and secures uniformity of movement of the loops and their connecting devices when the same are being carried outward by the belt B when opening the file and inward by the same when the file is being closed. The holders D, which connect with the loops 0, are made of sheet metal possessing 1 suitable elasticity to give clasping force to the holder to hold the card or picture placed between the two sides thereof, and are provided ontheir inner surfaces with points or teeth createdby indentations E on the outer surfaces of the same, which points or teeth engage the opposite sides of the card or photo graph inserted between them, and which, when taken in connection with the clasping force of the holder from its elasticity, renders it impossible for the inserted card orpicture to escape from the holder when opening and closing the file.

In practice the entering edge of the card or photograph is pressed between the engaging sides of the holder D, which sides are sufficiently yielding to pressure to permit the entrance of the card into position between the same, but which, by reason of the points or teeth formed by indentations E on the engaging sides, hold the card or photograph firmly between the same, while by means of hook K and eye H the file, when filled, may be hooked in open position, as in Fig. 1, to display the picture, Ate.

I am aware that photographic and card fileswith loops connected by cords or links and clamps formed without teeth for holding the card or photograph are in use, and will instance that to W. Verbeck, No. 316,586, dated April 28, 1885, upon which I make no claim whatever.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The photograph or card file A, composed of a flexible carrying-belt B, having hook K and eyes H, with loops G, separately arranged 011 said flexible belt, with holders D, having points or teeth formed by indentations E and connected with the carrying-belt to be carried thereby by loops 0, substantially as described and shown.
