UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
LUCIUS D. GOULD, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
PAINT-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 416,596, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed August 14, 1889. Serial No. 320,763, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, LU OIUS D. GOULD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New J ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paint-Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked th ereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to increase the durability of paint-brushes, particularly those wh ch are commonly employed in covering large surfacessuch as the roofs of buildingswith paint, tar, &c.
The invention consists in. the improved brush and in the arrangements and combinations of parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter set forth and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved device; and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same, showing the two positions of the brush in its holder. 7
In said drawings, a indicates an ordinary brush-handle, which is preferably of sufiicient length to allow of the brush being used by the painter as he stands on the roof.
1) indicates a ferrule of said handle, adapted to receive the pole portion thereof, and provided with forked arms 0 0. At the extremities said arms are slightly enlarged and are perforated to receive the pivotal pins or screws 6 e, for holding the brush-block d in position between the arms. Said block cl provides suitable bearings or acts as a base for the brushes f f, which are firmly fixed thereto in any suitable manner. 1
Heretofore in brushes for roof-paintin g purposes, where a long handle has been arranged at an angle to a broad collection of bristles, the said handle has ordinarily been fixed in its relation to the block or stock. Thus the wear on the bristles has been brought on one side, so that at that side the bristles soon become shorter than those of the opposite side,
the position shown in outline in Fig. 2.
wear, becomes unserviceable before half of the bristles are fairly worn away.
By my improvements I am enabled to easily and quickly reverse the relation of the brush to the handle, so that the wear which before came more directly at one side of the brush can be diffused over the whole of the brush by making the changes from time to time in the relation of said brush to the handle, the
bristles thus wearing away evenly, and the durability of the brush being greatly increased.
To secure the desired results at a limited expense of construction, to avoid expensive and complex mechanisms, and to enable the changes to be made at the least expense of time and labor, I have arranged the block d between the arms 0 c on pivotal bearings, as above indicated, so that it maybe turned pivotally from the position shown in full line Ito 0 hold the said block in either of its two-positions, I have provided a brace g, which serves the double purpose of bracing the block and holding it in its inclined positions and as a spring-catch by which the said block may be caught and fastened in a stationary relation to the handle'or released from such relation with facility and ease. When said brace is in the form of a spring-catch, it is adapted to spring into holding relation to a pin or lug '1 on the upper edge of the pivotal block. Said brace or holder is pivoted to the end of the ferrule, as at h, so that after the end of the said brace has been raised from the pint said brace may be turned on said pivot and be brought into position to again engage said pin and thus the brush, because of the unequal I I after the block has been brought to its secreverse the brush, so that its bristles point toward the opposite side of the handle from that to which they pointed When lying in their former position. The brush is therefore reversible as distinguished from being only adjustable, and by its being reversible the, advantages above described are secured.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is 1. In combination, the handle having arms 0 c,a block d, pivoted between said arms and provided with a pin or lug, and a pivoted spring-brace, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The improved paint-brush herein described, combining with a handle reversible in inclination with respect to the stock, said stock carrying the bristles, a brace extending a from the handle to the stock for holding the
