UNITED A, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SOLOMAN GUESS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 4,161, dated August 26, 1845.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SOLOMAN GUESS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented or discovered a newand useful chemical composition of matter for the removal of acid, grease, pitch, or various other spots from cloths or' other articles to which the same may be applied; and I do hereby declare that the nature of my discovery and the manner in whichthe composition is to be used are hereinafter particularly set forth and described.
In order to make my composition, boil four pounds of fucus 'vcsiculoses (sea or bladder wrack) in three pints of water until one pint of the water is evaporated; next, strain the decoction and mix it with one quart of ox-gall, one pound of carbonate of ammonia, threequarters of a pound of alum, and twenty-four pounds of common white soap, knownin commerce as perfumed Windsor soap. Melt the whole together in a kettle over a slowfire, and
when well melted stir the same together, so as to thoroughly incorporate the various materials.
In order to remove a grease, pitch, or acid spot from cloth it will only be necessary to rub some of the composition thereon, using therewith a little water and a sponge or piece of cloth or other suitable substitute. The removal of a spot by the aforesaid process on y be effected in a very short period of time.
