EXTENSION-MATTRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,023, dated November 26, 1889.
Application filed July 31, 1888. Serial No. 281,586- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN R. \VEBER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented-a new and Improved Extension-Mattress, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to extension-mattresses, and has for its object to provide an extension-mattress which may be extended or shortened without interfering with the springs, will be firmly braced at the ends, and may be rolled up.
lhe invention consists in an extensionmattress constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an extension-mattress constructed in accordance with this invention, shown in extended position with springs removed. Fig. 2 is a side view in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a detail with parts broken away.
In carrying out this invention the mattress is constructed with flexible longitudinal metallic strips 1, connected by metallic crossstrips 2 and the extensible end portions 3, consisting of the elastic V- shaped bracestrips 4, connected at one end to a metallic cross-bar 5, at the other end to a metallic cross-bar 6, located beneath cross-bar 5, and said V-shaped strips4 having a slot 7 in their lower portion, through which passes a headed pin 8, engaging the end cross-bars 2 and connecting the end portions 3 with the main frame of the mattress. By means of the slots 7 and the headed pins 8 the end portions 3 may be extended or shortened without interfering with the volute springs 9. The end portions 3 are firmly braced by the V-shaped elastic strips 4, and are held in extended position by flexible strips 10 on the cross-bars 6, having a slot 11 at one end engaging a headed projection 12 011 the end cross-bars 2.
When it is desired to fold the mattress up in compact form to be stored or for transportation, the mattress may be rolled up and fastened at its ends in any suitable manner, the longitudinal flexible strips 1 and the elastic V-shaped strips 4 permitting the mattress to be rolled up in compact shape. As shown, the cross-strips 2 and 6 are provided with volute springs 9, connected by chains 13.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An extension for mattresses, consisting of elastic V-shaped springs, a bar secured to the upper members of the springs, and. a second bar secured to the lower members of the said springs, the lower members of the springs being slotted longitudinally to adapt the extension to be adjnstably secured to a mattress, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In an extension-mattress, the combination, with the main frame provided with the pins 8 and studs 12, of sliding ends constructed with an upper and a lower bar united by elastic V-shaped braces having their lower members slotted tor engagement withpins 8, and the fastening-strips 10, adapted to engage the studs 12, substantially as shown and described.
A11 extension-mattress constructed with the main portion formed of longitudinal flexible metallic strips 1, connected to metallic cross-strips 2, the extensible end portions 3, formed with elastic V-shaped bracestrips 4, having their ends connected to cross-bars 5 and 6, with slots 7, engaging headed pins 8 on the end cross-bars 2, and the elastic fastening-strips 10 on cross-bars 6, having slot 11, engaging headed projection .12 on end cross-bar 2, the cross-strips 2 and 6 having volute springs 9, connected by chains 13, substantially as described.
