"NITE-D STATES CHARLES L. MILLS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
FOLDING SPRING BED-BOTTOM.v
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,323, dated May 8, 1883,
Application filed November 13, 18H2. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES L. MILLs, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Spring Bed- Bottoms 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains'to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a plan view of the bottom frame. Fig. 2 is 'an end View of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the bed-bottom complete. Fig. et is an end view of the same. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the catch or fastening, and Fig. 6 is a detail view of the spring-connection.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to an improved folding spring bed-bottom, the construction of which will be hereinafter fully described, and
particularly-pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the bottom frame of my lmproved spring bed-bottom. The saine consists of a series of longitudinal slats, of which the central one is denoted by letter B and the outer ones by C. The ends of the central slat, B, have short transverse straps D, and the ends of the outer slats, C, are connected by straps E. The inner ends of the latter are connected with the outer ends of the straps D by means of intermediate hinge-straps, F, having rounded thickened or re-enforced ends G, in which slots H are formed, to receive tongues -I at the ends of the straps D and E, which are twisted or clinched around therounded ends of the straps F, thus hinging andY connecting the parts securely together. The slats B and C support coiled springs J, of any suitable construction.
The top frame consists of rigid side pieces, K and L, to the ends of which short rigid inwardly-projectin g end pieces, M and N, are secured.
O Oare connecting-pieces, pivoted to the end pieces N, and connected detachably to the end pieces M by a fastening, P, which will be presently described. The connectingpieces and shoulders U, and nuts or fasteners V, hav- 5 5 ing wings W. Slots X are provided to receive the heads of said fasteners, which may be made secure by giving them a half-turn after placing them in position. The upper coils of the outer springs are connected securely to 6o Y the top frame in any suitable manner. The
several springs have their upper coils connected by spiral-spring connect1ons Y and links Z.
The operation will be readily understood.
By detaching the ends `of the connecting-pieces O from the end pieces M Vand the straps Q from the springs, the bed-bottom mayreadily be doubled or folded, so as to occupy but very little room in storage or transportation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United Statesl. In a folding spring bed-bottom, the combination of the middlevslat, B, having end straps D D, side slats, C, having end straps E E, and intermediate hinge-straps, F, provided with thickened or re-enforccd ends G, slot ted to receive the tongues I of straps D and E, substantially as and for the purpose herein 8o shown and set forth.
2. In a folding spring bed-bottom, the top frame consisting of the rigid side pieces, K L,
having end pieces, M N, and the connectingpieces O, pivoted to end pieces N, secured 8 5 detachably to the end pieces M, and having straps Q, as set forth.
3. As an improvement in bed-bottoms, the combination of the folding bottom frame, B
O D E F, the folding top frame, K L M N O 9:
Q, and the springs J, all constructed and arranged substantially as hereinset forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J. S. CORNELL, JAS. S. HALL.
