SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 341,246, dated l\l[ay 4,1886.
Application {led January S17, 1886.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADDisoN KEnNHoL'rs, a citizen of the United States7 residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed Bottoms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein tothe accompanying drawings, wlierein- Figure l is a plan of the bottom slats of a spring bedbottom, showing hinged connections between the slats embodying my improvemcnts. Fig. 2 is an end view of a spring bed-bottom showing my improvements. Fig.
3 is an end view showing the'bedbottom folded. Fig. 41s a horizontal section of one of the hinge-connections; and FiO. 5 is an clevation of sa1ne, showing the leaves of the hinge and their supporting-bars integral.
My invent-ion has relation to that form of bed-bottoms composed of sections united by slotted hinges, and it has for its object to provide a hinge-connection ot' simple and ceonomical construction which permits t-he bottom to be made wider or narrower, to suit different widths of beds, and adapts the bottom to be folded into compact form for transportation or other purposes.
My invention accordinglyv consists of a spring bed bottom the slats or sections of which are united by hinges, each leaf of which is slotted7 and which are connected by a bolt or pintlc working loosely in cach leaf-slot, to adapt the leaves of the hinges to slide upon each other to vary the width of the bed-bottom and permit it to be folded.
My invention further consists ofthe combination, construction, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the drawings, A represents a spring bedbottom of any well-known or other practical kind, and is shown composed of longitudinal bottom slats, a, transverseslats a', and springs a2. The slats a are divided into sections or divisions b b, united by hinges or pivotal connections C, composed of two leaves or arms,c c, having slots c, through which passes loosely a pin or pintle, c2, as more plainly shown in Fig. 4.
rIhe leaves or arms c c may be of any suitable form or design, and may be either sepa- Serial No. 189,902. (No model.)
rate from the slats a and riveted or otherwise fastened thereto, or they may be integral with slats a', as shown in Fig. 5.
The pintle el may be a bolt and nut, as indicated in Fig. Lt, or a rivet, as illustrated in Fig. 5, or otherwise made, as desired.
The slots in the leaves of the hinges C admit of the leaves sliding on each other to either draw the longitudinal slats atogether or spread them apart 'to alter the width of the bed-bottom to suit different sizes of bedsteads, and the hinges themselves admit of folding the bedbottom int-o compact form for shipping or stor age purposes.
Any number of hinges may be used. In
the drawings I have sho-wn four for each transverse slat a', or divide the latter into five sections, but, if desired, a greater or less number may be used. The hinges may be made of wrought, sheet, cast, or other metal or suitable material, as desired.
Vhat I claim isy I. In a spring bed-botto1n, a series of clips forming part of the cross rods or stays, each clip having a slot, and connected in pairs by a pintle passing through and working loosely in both the slots of a pair to form extension- Vhinges for lthe bed-bottom and admit of its folding, substantially as shown and described.
2. A spring bedbottom having cross stays or rods made in sections, upwardly-proieeting slotted arms at the meeting ends of the sections, and pintles or bolts loose in the slots in said arms and connecting them together to form extension-hinges and admit of the folding of the bed-bottom, substantially as shown and described.
3. A hinge for spring bed-bottoms, composed of two adjoining leaves, cach having a slot in its outer end, and a pintle loose in both slots and connecting the leaves together, substantially as shown and described.
4. rIhe bed-bottom hinge C, composed of leaves or arms c o, having slots o' c', and pin tlc o2, loose in both said slots, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ADDISON KEENHOLTS.
