J. F.'WISTROM.
BRIDGE GATE.
No. 415,011. Patented N01. 12, 1889 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
J OHAN F. WISTROM, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BRIDGE-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,011, dated November 12, 1889.
Application filed June 18, 1889. $erial No. 314,723. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHAN F. WISTROM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bridge-Gates, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.-
This invention relates to improvements in that class of guard-gates that are used on swing-bridges in closing the approach to the draw when the bridge is swung.
A practical application of my device is illustrated in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the abutment looking from the water-side,the bridge being open and the gate shown in position to close the approach; Fig. 2, a similar view showing the relative position of the gate and bridge when the latter is closed, the bridge being shown in section.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the bridge-abutment; B, the bridge; 0, the gate, and O C the hand-railing on the respective sides of the approach.
The main supporting-frame of the skeleton gate consists of the vertical central post D and the two outside bars D D. The lower end of the post D is inserted in the socketpiece E, the upper end supporting the center part of the lower horizontal beam F of the gate proper. The lower ends of the outside framing-bars D D are also inserted in the socket-piece E, and from thence extend upwardly and outwardly in a diagonal plane until they reach the point where they are connected by .the respective ends of the gatebeam F, when they terminate vertically and are connected by the horizontal gate-bars aa.
The supporting part of the frame-work is braced with the bars I) b and the rods dd (Z (Z. The socket-piece E, supporting the gate as a whole, is mounted on the pivot or rock shaft G, j ournaled in the abutment, there being just sufficient space between the abutment and the gate for the movement of the latter when converted from one position to the other. The counter-weight H is attached to the lower end of socket E, and serves the purpose of antomatically returning the gate from the horizontal position shown in Fig. 2 to the vertical position illustrated in Fig. 1.
When the bridge is turned from an open to a closed position, the under side, of the same comes in contact with one side of the gate, and gradually turns and holds the gate down until the bridge is again swung open, when the gate automatically assumes the position for closing the approach to the draw.
The gate is entirely automatic in operation, simple and durable in construction, positive in action, and not at all liable to get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a swing-bridge, of a guard-gate located in the pathway of the respective ends of said bridge and consisting of a vertical central post, the diagonal bars, the beam F, the bars a a, the braces b b, the rods 61 d d d, the weighted socket-piece, and the pivot or rock shaft on which the same is mounted, whereby the opening and closing of the bridge imparts a corresponding movement to the gate, substantially as set forth.
