SAMUEL w. REYNOLD Trice PATENT S, OF TOLEDO, OIIIO.
METALLIC FASTENER FOR TOBACCO SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,845, dated November 12, 1889.
Application filed June 28, 1889. Serial No. 315,928. (No model.)
T0 at whom itmay concern.-
Be it known thatI, SAMUEL W. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Metallic Fastener for Tobacco; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art'to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to a metallic fastener for tobacco, and has especial reference to that class of tobacco which is sold in small quantities, as by the ounce, pound, &c., the object of the invention being to provide a fastener that can be stamped out in a single piece.
A further object is to provide a fastener that shall be so formed that it can be used of itself as an advertising medium.
Heretofore in the branch of the art to which my invention pertains it has been usual to form the fasteners of wire, the tag or name to be on a separate piece and wrapped around the wire, making a device complicated and expensive.
In the construction shown it Will be seen that I have obviated this defect by making a fastener and tag in one piece.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a package of fine-cut tobacco with the fastener attached, showing in dotted lines the mode of twisting the ends to secure the device around the package. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the complete fastener as stamped out of a blank of metal. Figs. 3, 4:, and 5 are views showing modified forms of securing the ends to hold the fastener around the tobacco.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
A designates a package of tobacco to be secured in a compact mass by the fastener B. The fastener Bis formed with a tag 0 midway of its length.
D and E are arms formed on opposite sides of the tag, respectively, integral therewith, said arms being of a length to pass around the tobacco and hold the same in a compact mass by being twisted, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1.
The tag 0 can be made of any size to accommodate the name or other matter relative to the tobacco on which the fastener is attached by having the name stamped or painted, as desired.
In securing the tag to the tobacco the tobacco is made in the desired shape and quantity. The tag is then placed around the same, arms D and 'E being made to conform to the contour of the tobacco. The ends of the arms are then twisted, the ends of the arms D D being twisted together, as are also the ends of arms E E, forming a compact package of the tobacco.
It will be readily understood that the tag C may be of any desired shape, such as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or in the shape of a star, as shown in Fig. 3.
In Figs. 3 and a I have showna modified form, in which, instead of the ends being wound around each other, one end of the arms D and E alternately is enlarged, as at F, and perforated, so that the perforation G Will be large enough to accommodate the ends of the opposite arms and allow the same to pass through the perforations G and be bent on itself, holding the fastener securely around the package.
In Fig. 5 the ends of the arms are serrated,
as at H, so that when the serrations are brought together they will engage with each other and hold the tobacco securely together. I
It will be seen that the device is simple inv construction, less expensive, doing away with the necessity of employing a separate tag, and therefore more easily applied to the tobacco.
What I claim is 1. In a metallic fastener for tobacco, a fastener composed of a single piece of metallic substance formed with a tag integral therewith, and arms for securing the tobacco in a compact mass, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a metallic fastener for tobacco, a fastener composed of a single piece of metallic substance comprising a tag,andarn1s formed my own I hereby affix my signature in presintegrel therewith, one series of said arms enee of two witnesses.
being perforated, the opposite series being T 1 r v it LJNOTDS. passed through said perforations and bent on v SAML I L 5 themselves to confine the tobacco in a comitnesses:
pact mass, as and for the purpose set forth. JAMES RAYMER,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as CARROLL J. \VEBS'JER.
