SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,798, dated October 29, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MCOLINTOOK YOUNG, of Frederick, in the county of Frederick and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Ink-Erasers, of which the following is a specification.

materialas sand, emery, or pulverized glasscemented to its surface, combined with a holder or support, to which the strip is adjustably applied in order that different portions of its surface may be brought successively to an operating position and supported from the back when in use.

My invention is susceptible of embodiment in various forms, which-will be apparent to persons skilled in the art after reading this specification.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the eraser in its most simple form. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line a: m. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the eraser in a different form. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the same.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2,A represents the erasive strip, of cloth, leather, tough paper, or equivalent material, coated on one or both surfaces with sand, pulverized glass, or other similar-material glued or cemented thereto.

B represents the holder or support, which consists in this form of the device simply of a block of rubber, of suitable size to be-conveniently grasped and held, over the end of which the abrasive strip is drawn and secured by an encircling-band O forced thereover. The end of the support B is beveled, as shown, so that when used as a handle it willpresent and support the outer abrasive surface of the strip in suitable form to admit of its being applied to the exact portion of the paper required. As the abrasive surface of the strip becomes worn or dulled at the exposed point, it is necessary to loosen the band and shift the strip endwise, in order to bring a new portion into action.

In the form of device shown in Figs. 3 and 4 the strip or band A is in the form of along tape, which is coiled and inserted within a flat circular case or holder B, one end of the strip being drawn outward through a slit 1), made for the purpose and passed over a projecting and supporting rib Z) and under a confining-loop W. In this form of device the strip is inclosed and protected, except at its operative point. Fresh portions are brought into action by simply drawing the strip end wise out of the case. The rib 1) serves as a support for the active portion.

Having thus described my invention, I claim is 1. An ink-eraser consisting of the pliable strip coated with abrasive material and a holder or support to which the strip is adj-ustably secured.

2. The combination of a flexible strip coated with abrasive material, a holder or support having a convex surface, over which the strip is passed and by which it is supported, a confining-band, substantially as shown, acting to hold the strip in place to permit its longitudinal adjustment.

3. A rubber block or support, the flexible strip coated with abrasive material and ap-. plied to said block, and the clasp or band 0, applied as shown and described.
