Description

'of' the same ont-he line w, Fig. 1.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD J. MANNHEIM, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
BOX-LOOP kFOR HARNESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,785, dated October 29, 1889.
` Application filed J'une 5, 1889. Serial No. 313,212. (No model.) l
To a/ZZ wir/m it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD J. MANNHEIM, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Loops for Harness, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a box-loop for harness in which the loop proper and the base-strap may be firmly united with facility.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure l rep- 'resents a top View and Fig. 2 a side view, partly in section, of my improved box-loop for harness. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section Figs. 4 and 5 are a top view and avertical longitudinal section of a box-loop which is riveted to the connecting-straps; and Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section on line y y, Fig. 4.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This improved box-loop for harness comprises an elongated box A, an inner bottom layer b, and an outer bottom layer b. The box A consists of a blank composed of leather in one piece and provided with a series of centrallydisposed transverse slot-s a. The blank is folded longitudinally of itself into a box of rectangular cross-section, its meeting edges 3o abutting, or nearly so, at the bottom of the box.
The inner bottom layerb consists of a leather strap adapted to fit the interior of the box, and the outer bottom layer b consistsof a strap of a Width corresponding with the external width of the box. The slot-s c are of a length exceeding the width of the box, and hence they form a series of openings at the sides and top thereof. The parts are rmly y united by fastening devices-such as rivets,
4o stitching, or the equivalents thereof-which fastening devices are disposed opposite the several top openings of the box and serve to unite the inner and outer bottom straps and the inwardly projecting edges of the box,
the latter forming an intermediate layer between said bottom straps. The easy access to the bottom of the box given by the transverse openings therein facilitates the application of the fastening devices, and also permits a channeling of the leather for the stitches, whereby the latter may be covered. As the box proper is composed of one piece, it is very strong and its bottom is level and smooth.
The box-blank may be provided at one end With tongues d d, made integraltherewith, and
which. are bent back after applying the connecting-buckle B to the same, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the free ends of said tongues being riveted or otherwise fastened to the layers of leather or straps, and thus held rigidly in position. In this manner the expense of sewing on an extra piece for fastening the buckle is dispensed with and the connection lnade stronger and more effective.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A box-loop for harness, consisting of a box proper composed of a single blank in one piece folded longitudinallyl of itself into box shape and provided with a series of centrally-disposed transverse slots which constitute openingsextending across the top and down the sides of the box, in combination with an inner strap and an outer bottom strap, the edges of said box-blank extending between said straps and forming an intermediate layer, and fastening devices uniting said straps, and an intermediate layer disposed on opposite sides of the several top openings of the box, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RICHARD J. MANNHEIM.
