CHARLES PARKER, OF I-IARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
WIN DOW-JAC K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,785, dated October 15, 1889. Application filed June 29, 1889. Serial No. 316,098. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may colwern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES PARKER, of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvenients in lVindow-Jacks, of which the following` is a full, clear, and exaet description, whereby any one skilled in` the art can make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and compact device that may be used for the purpose of atfording a support that projects from a Window and beyond the outer face of the building; and to this end my invention consists in the combination of the seat or support with the several fastening, folding, and bracing parts, as more particularly hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawin gs, Figure 1 is a top view of my device shown in position in awindow, the frame of which is shown in horizontal cross-section. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the window-jack, part of the building being cut in vertical section. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the device in position for use, looking` from inside the window.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter a denotes the frame of the window-jack, that is of a length sufficient to extend across a window-sill and of a width to enable it to be used in a window of average size. This frame has on its inner end the holding-bars l) and b', that extend at each end beyond the frame, and are adapted to engage the window-frame on the inside, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The floor of the frame is provided with a folding section a', that is hinged to one side, and the bars l) b' are. also provided with a hinged portion b, that enables the bar to be shortened. On that part of the frame adapted to be located on the outside of the window there is a bar c, that is adapted to rest upon the windoW-sill, and to this bar is hinged the folding back cl and the folding bracket e. The back is made up of the arm d', hinged to the base-piece c, and also to the back d, the side parts of Which are provided with tenons dg, that fit into socketsd4 in that portion of the floorof the jack that projects outside of the window.
The bracket c is composed of a part e', that is hinged to the underneath part of the basepiece c, and to this is hinged the prop e, that opens outward a certain distance determined by the chain 63, so that the cross-piece may underlie the projecting part of the jack in position to firmly support this part When the Window-jack is in use.
The window-jack, When not in use, may be folded up into compact shape, the main floor or frame folding down to about half the full length of the device, and the arms and bracketpieces also folding fiat against the frame, making a very compact structure for storage or transportation.
I claim as my invention- In combination With the frame composed of the several parts united by hinges, the cross-bars b b', secured across the inner end of the frame, the rest or base-piece c, secured to the Outer part of the frame, the foldingback support d, the upright part d, being provided with the tenons (13, adapted to fit' sockets in the frame, and the folding bracket attached to the under side of the frame, all substantially as described.
CHARLES PARKER. WVitnesses:
ARTHUR B. J ENKINs, III. E. BACHARACH.
