HYDROCARBON VAPOR-IZER AND BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,200, dated October l, 1889.
Application filed May 27, 1889.
To ali whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. OGLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon Vaporizers and Burners; and I do herebyT declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hydrocarbon generators and burners; and it consists, substantially, in such features of construction, arrangement, and combinations of parts as will hereinafter be more particularly described, and pointed out in the claim.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and cheap apparatus by which-hydrocarbon oils may be converted into vapor and economically burned for either heating or cooking purposes.
Further, the invention has for its object to provide in connection with burners of this l character a safety attachment for preventing the passage of the vaporized oil up or back into the supply-reservoir, thereby obviating the danger of explosions so often resulting in the use of burners heretofore, all as will more fully hereinafter appear when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, Wherein- Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal sectional view of an apparatus embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved hydrocarbon generator and burner as arranged within a stove for heating the same.
In carrying my invention into effect I resort tothe use of a piece of ordinary pipe for the generator, and provide the same at each end with a removable head, so as to permit ready and easy access to the interior for the purposes of cleaning or repair. the said generator being formed or provided with a jet through which the vaporized oil issues to be burned. Supported by and depending from the generator is an arm or bracket made up of sections of pipe smaller in diameter than Serial No. 312,222- (No model.)
that of the generator, and this bracket carries at its lower end a deiiector arranged so as to come directly beneath the jet, and which deflector causes the flame burning at the jet to impinge against the sides of the generator, and thereby keep the latter sufficiently heated at all times to produce a continuous vapori Zation of the oil as it passes from the reservoir to the generator. I also resort to a chamber arranged intermediate of the reservoir and generator, into which chamber is tightly packed a quantity of asbestus for the purpose of preventing the heating or vaporization of the oil too close to the reservoir, thereby preventing explosions which might occur if the vapor should pass back or up into the reservoir containing the supply.
The several parts of my improved apparatus, including the bracket for holding the deflector, are preferably made separable, so as to permit them to be readily packed for shipment or transportation with consumption of but small space, and in uniting the said several parts I desire to be understood that if it is found necessary I may employ any suitable packing at the joints, so as to prevent leakage or escape of both the oil and vapor while the apparatus is in use.
Reference being had to the several parts by the letters marked thereon, A represents the generator into which the oil is received, and which is provided at each end with a removable head a, the supply-pipe B fitting in one `of said heads, as shown, and communicating of the supply-pipe it will be noticed that I have arranged a suitable valve e, by which the supply of oil from the reservoir to the gen*- erator is regulated and controlled.

It Will be noticed that the several parts of the supply-pipe are united by any Well-known form of joint, and at the points Where they are connected I may use any suitable packing for maintaining a tight joint.
Fitting in the top of the generator A is a hollow bracket F, and which is made up of the parts l, 2, and 3, coupled together7 as shown, the said bracket being extended'below the generator and supporting at its lower end a dished or concaved deector G,Which comes directly beneath a jet H, depending from the generator, and provided in its lower end with suitable orifices for the escape of the vaporized oil. The purpose of forming said de- Hector G of a dished or concaved shape is to enable the same to catch any drippings of oil through the jet-orifices, as Well also as to defleet the flame of the jet against the sides of the generator, and thereby keep up a con tinuous Vaporization of the Iiuid flowing into the latter from the generator through the supplyepipe. Drippings from' the jet will be caught by the dele'ctor and consumed by the 4apparatus as it is being used.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a very simple and cheap form of apparatus, and one that can be readily taken apart and cleaned, and also one that consumes but small space in packing for shipment and transportation.
Having thus described my invention, WhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a hydrocarbon generator and burner, the combination, with the generator A, having at each end a removable head, and having depending therefrom a burner having `jet-oriices, of the supply-pipe leading from a reservoir and itting in one head of the reservoir, an intermediate non-conducting chamber-between the reservoir and generator, the hollow bracket F, supported from the generator and made vup of the parts l, 2, and 3, united together, and the dished or concave deflector supported by the bracket immediately beneath the burner, substantially as described.
