STOVE-PIPE SHELF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,485, dated September 24, 1889.
Application filed December 21, 1888. Serial No. 294,275. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIS JEROME YOUNG, SHAFFER H. YOUNG, and ZAOHARIAH URSINIS KNODE, citizens of. the United States, residing at llebron, in the county of Thayer and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stove Pipe Shelves, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in stove-pipe shelves; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and Claimed. 1
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved stovepipe shelf. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a central transverse section. Fig. 4c is a horizontal section.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the lower section of the stove-pipe rising from the stove. B is the upper section, arranged in vertical alignment with the lower section. O is the shelf secured to the lower end of the upper section of the stovepipe, and D is the downwardly -tapering hood connecting the said shelf with the upper end of the lower section of the stovepipe. Within the hood we arrange just below the lower plate of the shelf Ca horizontal partition E, the ends of which are arranged a slight distance from the ends of the hood, thereby leaving open spaces F, as shown. The said partition is provided at its sides with the (lOWIlWtLI'dly extending integral tongues G, which have their lower ends socured to the upper end of the lower section of thestove-pipe, and thereby support the said partition within the hood. The partition is provided at its center with an opening I l, arranged in vertical alignment with the upper and lower sections of the stovepipe and adapted to be closed by a tilting damper I. The damper-rod J is journaled in the sides of the hood, and one end extends beyond the front side of thehood and is bent to form an operating-handle K, as shown.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that we have provided a very simple stovc-pipe shelf of the same general character as that shown in Letters Patent No. 387,277, granted to us August 7, 1888.
By our improved device, when the damperis closed, the heat will be deflected by the horizontal partition toward the ends of the hood, and will. then take an inward course toward the upper section of the stove-pipe and escape through the same. The heated currents are thus brought into direct contact with the entire surface of the lower shelf, and consequently very quickly raise the same to the desired temperature, so that articles placed thereon will be kept warm, as will be readily understood. When the damper is opened, the heated currents pass directly through the central opening in the partition and out through the central opening in the stove-pipe, so that the shelf will not be raised to such a high temperature.
Our improved device is very simple and inexpensive. The construction is such that it occupies comparatively little or no room within the hood, so that the interior of the hood is not provided with the obstructions to the free circulation of the heated currents.
Having thus described our improvements, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the shelf and the hood having aligned openings, of the horizontal partition within the hood, having its ends arranged a slight distance from the ends of the hood, and provided with a central opening in alignment with the openings in the hood and shelf, the supporting-tongues formed integral with and depending from the sides of the partition, and the damper adapted to close the central opening in the partition and having its operating-rod journaled in the sides of the hood, as specified.
2. The combination, with the stoveshelf and the hood depending therefrom, of the horizontal partition within the hood, having a central opening and arranged out of con tact with the hood, the supporting-tongues depending from the sides of the partition, and a damper adapted to close the central opening in the partition, as set forth.
