Application filed May 9, 1889- To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HERMAN EPPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belleville, in the county of St. Clair, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reels or Swifts, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification I and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a reel having a central pin with an opening therein, and a clamping device with a standard adapted to fit in said opening and provided with jaws adapted to embrace a table or other support.

It also consists in forming a reel of pivoted slats and a central pin, and providing the same with a holder having a standard which is adapted to enter an opening in said pin, and jaws which are adapted to embrace or grip a table or other support.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a reel embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective View of the attaching or clamping device therefor. Fig. 3 represents avertical section of a detached portion on an enlarged scale.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a reel or swift formed of bars or slats a, a number of which are pivotally connected, as shown, at their ends and centers, after the manner of lazy-tongs, so that they may be either extended or folded, as shown in the dotted lines in the figure. A cross bar or slat Z), having its outer ends unconnected, is attached at or about its center to one of the crossings of the slats a by means of the screw-post G, and carries on said ends pins or studs A. The outer connected ends of the pivoted slats a. have also pins or in the central screw-pin G of the reel, it being seen that the reel is supported on said standard and the latter held in position on the table by the jaws D C, said standard forming a bearing for the reel and permitting the same to be rotated forpurposes requiring the same.

The reel may be readily lifted from the standard and the clamp removed from the table, the jaws yielding sufficiently when the clamp is withdrawn to allow the same to be clear of the table.

In practice the standard, the jaws, and the spring are formed of a continuous piece of wire bent into shape, as will be most clearly seen in Fig. 2.

Owing to the lazy-tongs, which comprise part or, if desired, all of the bars of the reel, the reel may be expanded or contracted, so as to be adjustable to skeins or hanks of different lengths. When the adjustment is accomplished, the screw pin or post G, which consists of a top portion having the shoulder c and a threaded portion (1, is operated or turned so as to draw the slats a and I) close together, the upper slat a being against the shoulder c of the post, whereby the said slats are firmly held in position.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination of a reel having a central pin with an opening therein and a clam ping device with a standard adapted to fit in said opening, and provided with jaws adapted to embrace a table or support, substantially as described.

2. A reel consisting of slats pivotally connected, a screw-pin for clamping the same in position, the said pin having an opening therein, and a holder having a standard adapted to enter said opening and provided with jaws adapted to embrace or grip atable or support, said parts being combined substantially as described.

3. A reel consisting of slats pivotally connected at their ends and centers, a cross-slat, and a screw-pin with an openingtherein, in combination with a holder having a standard adapted to be inserted in said opening in said screw-pin, and having jaws adapted to emastandard adapted to fit in said opening in brace or grip a table or support, substantially the screw-pin, substantially as described.
