SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,645, dated August 20, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. MYERs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachment- Seats for Bath-Tubs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The object of my invention is to furnish an adjustable attachment for bath-tubs which will be useful and convenient either as a seat when bathing the feet or when drying the body after bathing, or as a shelf to hold clot-hes or other articles which are being washed in the tub.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of part of a wash-tub furnished with my adjustable shelf; Fig. 2, an end View of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a side View of one of the universal hinges for attaching the shelf to the side of the tub; Fig. at, an end view of Fig. 3 and Fig. 5, an end View of one side of the supports, showing cushion to prevent scratching of the rail of the tub.

My shelf A is constructed of two or more bars a, to which a number of slats b, which may be of any desired width, are suitably secured. Attached to the bars a by keepers or bearings c are two metal arms or supports 13. The ends of these supports bend upward, as shown in Fig. 2, and one end of these supports is pivoted or hinged to one side of the top of the tub, while the other side is bent over and rests upon the top of the other side of the tub.

The device for pivoting the supports B to the tub is constructed as follows: 0, Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, are bearings screwed or otherwise suitably secured to the top of the bath-tub. D is a short shaft supported by and free to revolve in the bearings O. E is a bearing in the shaft D, in which the end of the support B is placed and in which it is free to turn.

In order that the support B may be retained within the bearing E the end of the support is furnished with a lug F,which projects downward, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4,

and in order to introduce the end of the support B with the lug F into the bearing E the upper part of this bearing is slotted out, as shown at G, Fig. The support is turned so as to bring the lug opposite the slot G, when the support can be put in or taken out of the bearing E. The support B extends downward from the bearing E to any convenient distance, when it bends, as shown in Fig. 2, and extends nearly across the tub, when it turns up and has its other end bent over in order to rest upon the top of the tub. This end of the support may be furnished with a piece of rubber H or other soft material, in order to prevent it from scratching the woodwork of thetub.

The device when in use rests as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the water from the person or article upon the shelf can drip down between the slats. \Vhen the device is not in use, it can be turned up, as shown in Fig. 2 by the dotted lines, so as to rest against the Wall. The fastenings by which the supportsB are attached to the side of the bath-tub, being universal joints, allow the shelf A and supports B to lie parallel to each other, as shown by the dotted lines, Fig. 2.

Having thus described my invention, I (:lai1n The combination, in a seat for bath-tubs, of the shelf A, supports B, the ends of which turn up, as shown, one end being adapted to rest on the side of the tub and the other be ing furnished with a downwardly-projecting lug F, bearings G, secured to the top of the tub, shafts D, supported by and free to revolve in bearings O, and bearing E in shaft D, slotted out at G, in order to allow the introduction of lug F 011 the end of support- B, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
