SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,590, dated August 20, 1889a Application iiled April 25, 1889. Serial No. 308,514. (No mcdel.) y
To all whom it nitty concern:
Be it known that l, THOMAS C. JOYCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berlin, in the county of Green Lake and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Commodes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved commode, showing the top or lid thrown back and t-he arms lockedin place ready for use; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view of the commode closed; Fig. 3, a similar view taken at right angles to the line on which Fig. 2 is taken; Fig. 4, a detail sectional view of the removable draw adapted to contain the vessel or pot and confine the odors arising therefrom; and Fig. 5, a detail sectional view of one of the curved hinged arms, showing the spring-catch.
This invention has particular reference to invalids and childrens commodes of that class wherein all the parts are contained within a casing mounted upon suitable supporting-legs; and it consists in certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, that will be fully hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.
The essential object l have in view is to provide improved and simple means whereby when the draw is-removed from the commodecasing to be carried out of the apartment an automatic flexible cover will close over the opening of the draw, and thereby prevent the escape and dissemination of disagreeable and unhealthful odors into the apartment, as will be more fully hereinafter specified.
The invention also has other minor objects' in view, which will fully appearin the course of this description.
Referring to the annexed drawings, A designates a suitable casing or box, of substantially a rectangular shape, which is mounted upon suitable supporting-legs, and is provided with ahinged lid or top which is adaptn ed to be turned up into a vertical position, as shown in Fig. l, to form a back or rest for the occupant of the commode. A removable seatpiece B is iittedwithin the casing A and rests upon cleats a upon the interior of said casing, the said seat being provided with the usual opening l). This seat B is held removably within the commode-body by means of a small plate or pin c, which is secured to the seat and projects into a recess in the body. lnserted in the commode-body, from the rear side preferably, is a removable draw C, which is provided with a suitable handle, and is guided in its movements by means of bars d, secured in thelower inner corners of the conv mode-body. This draw C is provided with a double bottom e and grooved side pieces f, as shown. bottom e and in the grooves in the side pieces f is adapted to slide a iiexible cover D, which is sufficiently long to extend from the forward end of the draw back around the grooves in the rear ends of the sides f and down between the bottom portions, as shown in Fig. et. The lower end of the folding cover is provided with a catch or lug f, which projects through a slot a in the lower portion of the double bottom, and is adapted to engage a spring-catch 7L, recessed in the bottom of the commode-body. Then the draw is inserted in the commode-body, the lug g catches in the recess in which the spring-catch is secured, and as the draw is pushed into the casing the iieXible cover will be automatically drawn down between the bottom portions of the draw, uncovering the pot contained within the draw. When the draw is withdrawn from the casing, the lug g will automatically engage the spring-catch 71., and the flexible cover will be thereby pushed up over the opening inthe draw, entirely closing the same and preventing the escape of the odors arising from the inclosed pot. Vhen the draw is drawn entirely out, the lug g will automatically slip off the springcatch. The draw and hinged top are made The Between the portions of the doubleA IOO lower ends of the said curved sections are each provided with a spring-catch l, which are adapted to engage notched plates m, secured to the seat B, and thereby hold the arms in position. The oatchesl are provided with thumb-pieces n, by means of which they are disengaged from the plates on the seat B when it is desired to close the commode. Vhen the lid is thrown down and the commode closed, the hinged curved sections 7c are folded over upon the main section, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the arms thus folded being passed down between the side edges of the seat-piece and the respective sides of the commode-body. Vhen the armsections are thus folded back, the thumb-pieces n and eyes p are set in suitable recesses of', formed in the hinged lid and arms. A strap or guard G is stretched between the arm-sections and detachably secured to the eyes p in the armsections by means of spring-clasps or snaphooks s. This guard is employed when the commode is occupied by young children and serves to prevent them falling off the seat. This guard is removed entirely when the commode is closed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a commode, the combination of a casing, a lid hinged to the casing and provided with arms F, curved sections k, hinged to the ends of these arms, springeatches upon the lower ends of these sections k, and a seat B, fitted within the casing and provided with notched plates fm, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. In a commode, the combination of a oasing, a removable draw inserted in this easing, a sliding flexible Cover mounted in grooves upon this draw, a lug attached to this folding Cover, and a spring-catch secured upon the said casing and adapted to engage the said lug, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
A. L. TUCKER, C. C. WELLENSGARD.
