L. W. DOREN. SASH BALANCE.
No. 409,569. Patented Aug. 20, 1889.
FIGJ- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFicE.
LEWIS IVATSON DOREN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY SOHMASEN, OF SAME PLACE.
SASH-BALANCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,569, dated August 20, 18.89.
Application filed A ril 10, 1839. Serial No. 306,680. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS W'ATSON DOREN, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvem ent in Vindow Attachments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure I is an elevation, part in section, illustrative of my invention. Fig. II is an enlarged side View of the attachment removed. Fig. III is an enlarged edge view.
My invention relates to a device for assisting in raising or loweringa window-sash, and which also serves the purpose of a safety device, which will prevent the window from being opened from the outside; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the window-frame. 3 the lower sash. To the frame 1 is secured a bracket 4, to which is pivoted at 5 a springdrum 6. The spring is illustrated at 7 in Fig. II, one end being secured to the drum at 8 and the other end to the central spindle or bracket lat 9. The drum has a flange 10 on one end and a flange 11 on the other end. Between these flanges a cord or cable is wound upon the drum, and its opposite ends extend upward and downward above and beneath the drum, and are secured to the sash at 14. The flange 11 of the drum is provided with. notches 15, with which engages one end 16 of a lever 17, pivoted at 18 to the bracket 4:. (See Figs. I and II.) The end of the lever 2 represents the upper and-- 17 extends beyond the Window-frame, as shown in Fig. I, and by pressing downward on its outer end its inner end will be raised out of engagement with the notches of the flange 11. WVhen the lever is disengaged from the drum, the action of the spring tends to lift the sash, and thus assists in opening or closing it, the lower part of the cable 12 winding upon the drum as the lower part unwinds.
Besides assisting in raising the sash, the device holds the sash to any adjustment, as When the lever 17 is in engagement with the drum it will be impossible to move the sash 7 either up or down.
I claim as my invention- 1. In combination with a window-sash, a spring-drum provided with notches, a cable attached to the drum and to the sash, and a pivoted lever engaging the notches in the drum and having an end projecting inward beyond the pivot for engaging the drum and an end projecting outward beyond the pivot for engagement by the hand, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a window sash an d frame, of a bracket secured to the frame, a spring-drum having a notched flange and journaled in the bracket, a cable secured to the drum and extending in both directions therefrom and secured by its opposite ends to the sash, and a pivoted lever engaging the notches of the drum-flange, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
LEWIS IVATSON DOREN. In presence of- EDW. S. KNIGHT, BENJN. A. KNIGHT.
