GEORGE NV. NUSBAUM, vOF LEHIGI-ITON, PENNSYLVANIA.
T O Y SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,421, dated August 20, 1889.
Application filed April l1, 1889. Serial No. 306,819. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. NUsBAUM, of Lehighton, in the county of Carbon and Stateof Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Toy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in the novel details and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of a toy embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line x at, Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line y y, Fig. l.
The invention consists of a ianged boar( or box-like structure, having certain portions thereof or points thereon separately marked or indicated, as by different colors, and a series of balls er marbles bearing distinguishing marks or designations corresponding to the designated points on the board.
The invention also comprises, in the preferred form, the iianged board or box-like structure, formed with a series of depressions and a series of pockets or pens around the sides or edges of the board, and a series of balls or marbles corresponding in number to the combined number of depressions and pockets.
Referring to the parts, the bottom board or plate A is provided with the raised iiange A', forming a box-like structure adapted to contain a series of balls or marbles B. At each corner of the boxdike structure A A', or at other desired points around the same, the pockets or pens C are formed by the partitions I), said partitions being formed with an opening d, which openings d are formed on lines radiating from the center, each opening facing that of the opposite pocket, whereby, when the box is tilted to direct a marble into a pocket, any ball that may be in the opposite pocket will have a tendency to escape therefrom. y
In the bottom A are formed the dcpressions e, which are arranged a distance from the entrances of the pockets snflicient to not impede a ball or marble directed te the poekets. In the present instance the depressions are ve in number, arranged in crnciform, there being a depression for the extremities of each line or arm of the cross and one at the center or intersection of the lines. The marbles are each differently colored or otherwise given a separate distinguishingmark from its fellows, and the depressions and pens are correspondingly colored or marked. The depressions and pens thus define the point or portion of the board on or to which the different marbles belong. In use the object to be accomplished is to bring the marbles onto or into their proper place without directly moving them With the lingers..
The movement of the box necessary to direct a marble into a pen or pocket will have a tendency to cause a marble in the opposite pocket to escape therefrom, and a marble seated on a depression will have a tendency to roll Ytherefrom at any movement of the box either in directing a marble to another depression or to a pocket. Thus considerable skill is required to direct all the Vmarbles to their proper places.
I have distinguished the depressions and pockets and their corresponding marbles by the series of numbers l0 l0 to 1S 1S, though `in practice, as explained above, they may be distinguished by being correspondingly colored.
I am aware that it is old to construct a toy consisting of a box formed with a series of concentric ways having openings at opposite points thereon, a pen or pocket being located at the center of such box to receive marbles or balls, and I do not claim the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein-described toy, consisting of the board having flanges or sides surrounding the same, pockets arranged at diagonally-op posite points, each pocket having an opening therein, depressions made in the board at the center and at diametrically-opposite points, said pockets and depressions being differently marked, and a series of balls corresponding in number to the number of pockets and depressions collectively, each ball having a mark corresponding to that of a certain pocket or IOO depression, substantially as shown and described.
2.-v The herein-described toy, consisting Qf the rectangular board A, having the sides or flanges A', the pockets D at each e0rner,l1av ing openings d opening into the box-like structure, the depressions a, arranged between the pockets and at the center of the board, each pocket and depression having a certain ro mark, and a series of balls B, corresponding in number to the sum of the pockets and depressions, and each ball having a mark co1'- responding to the mark 0f a qertain pocket or depression, substantially as shown and described.
GEO'. W. NUSBAUM.
