UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
EDW'IN B. STIMPSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SUSPENDER-END.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,338, dated August 20, 18 89. Application filed October 25, 1888. Serial No. 289,115. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN B. STIMPsON, of Brooklyn,in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Straps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My improvement relates to straps employed in suspenders and similar articles.
I will describe a strap embodying my improvement in detail, and then point out the novel features in claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a face View of a portion of a strap embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section, 011 an enlarged scale, taken on the dotted line 00 06, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing a slight modification. Fig. 5 is a rear View showing another modification.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designates the main or body port-ion of the strap in the example of my improvement shown. The strap comprises two folds a, the edges of which meet at about midway in the width of the strap. Between the folds a is a second portion a. I prefer to emply a lining-piece 0 arranged between the folds a and the intermediate portion a and inclosed by them. The folds a and the intermediate portion a are secured together by two longi- 'tudinally-eXtending rows of stitching h.
These rows of stitching are arranged close together and at the meeting edges of the folds in such manner that each rowof stitching secures one of the edges of the folds. These rows of stitches are therefore about midway in the width of the strap. As shown, these rows 1) are composed of zigzag stitches. I have shown similar rows of stitches 1) near the edges of the strap.
O designates a tab, which may be made of leather or similar material. This tab has formed in it a button-hole c. As shown, it has curved edges near its lower extremity. It is secured to the main body of the strap by havingits upper portion passed for a distance between the portions a a of the strap before the same are sewed together. The rows of stitches h secure the upper end portion of the tab between the portions a a. These rows of stitches are then extended along the tab O, about midway in the width thereof, and substantially in the same relations to each other as before, to near the outer end of the tab. By cutting through the material of the tab between the rows of stitches Z) thereon a suitably-worked button-hole is formed. It will therefore be seen that the rows of stitches which secure the portions a a of the strap also secure the tab to the strap and form the stitching about the side edges of the buttonhole in the tab. The rows of stitches b may be extended along the edges of the tab 0, if desired, so as to further secure the tab to the main body of the strap.
In Fig. 4 I have shown that the portions to of the main body of the strap or the lining a may be continued beyond the end of the strap adjacent to the tab and over the rear face of the tab, to which they may be secured to form a strengthening-piece e. I have shown them 'as secured by means of the stitches 1) near the edges of the tab, and also by the stitches b about the button-hole, which latter would in this instance of course be out through such extended portion of the strap or lining. The portion 6 may, however, be secured to the tab by paste or other adhesive material. It not only strengthens the tab, but also the button-hole.
Instead of extending the main portion of the strap or the lining over the tab in the manner described to strengthen it, Imay em ploy a separate strengtheningpiece c, as shown more clearly in Fig. 5, which may be secured to the tab in a manner similar to that already described.
By my improvement I am enabled to construct straps comprising a button-hole tab Very cheaply and rapidly, and which are at the same time very durable and strong.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a strap, the combination, with a main or body portion folded on itself, the adjacent edges of which are secured by rows of stitching, of a button-hole tab, said tab being socured to the main or body portion bytherows of stitching previously referred to, which also form the work of the button-hole, and by rows of stitching along the side edges of the main or body portion, substantially as specified.
2. In a strap, the co1nbinati0n,with a main or body portion folded on itself, the adjacent edges being secured by rows of stitching, of a button-hole tab, a strengthening-piece upon the rear side of the tab, said tab portion and strengthening-piecebeing secured to the main or body portion by the rows of stitching previously referred to,Which also form the work 10 of the button-hole, and by rows of stitching along the side edges of the main or body portion, substantially as specified.
