BUTTER-PACKAGE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,318, dated August 20, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, Sinnen CnrrTnNnnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohatfield, in the county ot Fillmore and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful linprovements in Butter-Packages, ot which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of but-- ter-packages in which a jar, of earthenware or similar material, is combined with a suitable protective casing; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive, and which, in addition to protecting the jar from breakage, sliall, to a certain extent, preserve its contents from the influences of excessive heat and cold.

lVith these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

A designates a jar or crock, made, prefer ably, of earthenware, and provided near its top 4with an interior flange or shoulder B, adapted to support a flat cover C, which may be made of the same materia-l as the body of the jar or crock. in the usual manner, in this jar or crock and the cover O placed in position upon the shoulder or ange B, as will be seen in Fig. 2 et the drawings.

D l) designate two heads or caps, each of which may be constructed of a disk E, of wood7 of suitable thickness, and of a diameter slightly exceeding that of the jar or crock to which the heads are to be applied, and having a rim F, of tin or.other suitable sheet metal, secured thereto by means of tacks or in any convenient and durable manner. Each of the said caps or heads is, in addition, provided with a circumferential series of headed The butter is to be packed,

screws or tacks G G, which are driven through the metallic rim and partially into the wooden disk of each head, from which the said screws or tacks extend so as to form radially-projecting studs, as will be clearly seen in Fig. l of the drawings.

Between the wooden disks E and the rims F are interposed the ends of the jacketsor wrappers ll H2, of thick paper or straw-board, which are arranged to telescope within one another.

The crock or jar, having been iilled with butter, is placed in the jacket H of one of the heads D, between which and the bottom of the jar is interposed a layer K, of excelsior or other suitable elastic packing material. Over the cover O of the jar is placed a thick layer of paper L, and the other cover D, with its jacket H2, is then placed in position, a layer M, of excelsior or other suitable packing material, being interposed between it and the paper L. A wire or cord O is then laced around the projecting studs G G of the caps or covers, so as to draw them together and tighten them upon the package, which is new ready for labeling and shipment.

rlhe operation vand advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed.

The protective covering of the jar or crock comprises merely the two heads or caps, which may be easily and inexpensively manufactured of convenient sizes, besides the paper, wire or twine, and excelsior, of which latter article but a small quantity will be required.

The package serves to a great extent to exclude the air, thus preventing deterioration of the contents of the package, which is also to a great extent protected by the double paper or straw-board wrapper or jacket from the influences of excessive heat and cold. Said 'paper jacket also serves to assist in protectin g the jar or crock from breakage.

hly improved package is especially convenient for the use o'l farmers and producers for putting up butter in suitable packages for family use. The device is also useful for the reshipment of empty creeks or jars, and it may be used over again indefinitely.

l-Iavin g thus described my invention, I claim TOO and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesv1. The combination of an earthenware jar or crock having an interior flange or shoulder, a cover placed upon the latter, the heads or caps having radially-extending studs, packing material interposed between the top and bottom of the jar and said heads or caps, a layer of paper interposed between the cover of the jar and the packing material, and a fastening-cord laced around the studs of the heads or caps, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the earthen jar, the telescoping paper wrappers or jackets surrounding the same and having their ends interposed between the disks E and their encircling hoops or rims composing the heads or caps, the studs extending radially from the latter, packing material placed between the top and bottom of the jar and said heads or caps, a layer of paper interposed between the cover ot the jarrand the packing material, and a fastening-cord laced around the studs of the caps or heads, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a butter-package, the herein-described heads or caps, consisting ot wooden disks having the telescoping paper or straw-board jackets secured thereto by sheet-metal rims or hoops and provided with radially-extending studs, and a fastening-cord laced around the studs, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.

4. The combination, with a jar or similar breakable package, of the herein-described heads or caps, consisting of wooden disks having the telescoping paper or straw-board jacket secured thereto by sheet-metal rims or hoops, and having radially-extending studs and a fastening-cord, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
