A. P. THISSELL 8v G. S. BRADSTREET.
WASH 1301mm.
N0..408,766. PatentedAug.13,-1889.
UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR P. THISSELL AND GEORGE S. BRADSTREET, OF BEVERLY,
MASSACHUSETTS.
WASH-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Batent No. 408,766, dated August 13, 1889.
' Application filed April 1, 1889. Serial No. 305,563- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR P. THISSELL and GEORGE S; BRADSTREET, both of Beverly, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wash-Boilers, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art orv science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichv Figure 1 is an end elevation of .our improved boiler with the cover in position; Fig. 2, a like View showing the cover in use as a drainer; Fig. 3, a top plan view of the same, the body of the boiler being broken off; and Fig. 4, a vertical transverse section of the drainer.
Like letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
Our invention relates to that class of boilers which are employed in washing clothing,
and it consists in certain novel features, as hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simple, cheap, and effective device of this character.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from' the following explanation. I
In the drawings, A represents the body of the boiler, which is of the ordinary form and construction, and is provided at each end with a handle I).
The cover B is of the usual oval form, and has its sides d extended or broadened. One of the long sides (1 is cut away or grooved at h.v The top f of thebover is flattened at g,
said flattened portion being provided with drain holes or perforations 'r'. A disk 0 is swiveled on the inner face of said flattened portion by means of a key m, said disk being provided with perforations 19, adapted to register with the perforations in the cover. The key on is designed to'be of such length that it will hold the disk C sufficiently close to the cover to prevent vertical movement thereof, a washer or similar means being employed to effect this, if necessary. A slotted drain-tray D is disposed within the cover, one edge of said tray being inserted beneath an inwardlyprojecting flange r on one side cl and secured by a hinged catch t on the opposite side cl, the purpose of said tray being to prevent the clothes from obstructing the perforations p 2'. A hook t is hinged to the supporting-flange z of the cover opposite the groove h. I
In the use of our improvement the coverB is employed in the usual manner to close the boiler, as shown in Fig. 2, while boiling the clothes, the disk 0 being turned by the key m so that its perforations Will not register with the perforationsz' in said cover, thus preventing the steam from escaping. After the clothes have been sufficiently boiled the cover is removed, the keym serving as a handle. The cover is then inverted and placed in the boiler at right angles thereto and at one end thereof, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, it being secured by inserting the hook o in the boilerhandle I). The disk 0 is revolved by means of the key m so that its perforations p register with the holes 11 in the flattened portion of the cover. The clothes are taken from the boiler and deposited on the tray D, and the water therefrom will drain through the cover back into the boiler. The groove h is formed in the side d, to enable the clothes to be more readily transferred to the cover.
By detaching the hook o the clothes maybe transported in the cover to the rinsing-tubs.
Having thus explained our invention, what we claim is- 1. In a wash-boiler, a coverhaving a portion of its top flattened and perforated, a disk swiveled'to said flattened portion and provided with drain-openings, and a slotted tray adapted to be detachably secured in said cover, all being combined to operate substantially as described.
2. In a wash-boiler,acover having the central portion of its top flattened and provided with drain-holes, a perforated disk swiveled to said flattened portion, a key for said disk, a slotted tray disposed within said cover, and
a flange and catch in said cover for securing said tray, substantially as described.
3. In a wash-boiler, the combination of a body provided with handles, a cover having elongated sides and a central flattened portion in its top provided with drain-openings, a perforated disk swiveled to said top, a key for revolving said disk,a slotted tray adapted to be inserted in said cover, a flange and catch for detachably securing it therein, andahook on the supporting-flange of said cover for securing it in an inverted position on said body, all being arranged to operate substantially as described.
4. I11 a wash-boiler, the combination of the body A, having the handles 11, With the cover B, provided with the groove h, perforated flattened portion g, the perforated disk 0, key
