SCYTHE-=SNATH FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,505, dated August 6, 1889.
Application filed February 25, 1889. Serial No. 301,103. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADDISON D. MYERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Geneva, in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scythe-snath Fastenings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to that class of fastenings in which the. blade-tang engages a swinging plate by the adjustment of which the point of the scythe is thrown in or out to meet the requirements of the user; and it consists, first, in providing the heel ring or band with a lip or projection through which the clamping-bolt passes, and by which the latter connects the heel-rin g and adjusting-plate; second, in forming the adjusting-plate with an integral pivot, upon which it turns or swings, whereby the use of a separate bolt and the through-boring and consequent weakening of the snath are avoided; third, in a separate holding-ring placed on the clamping-bolt, which ring engages and holds the adj ustingplate when the latter is clamped down.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustratemy invention and form a part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of the butt of a snath, showing the under side. Fig. 3 is a similarview showing the upper side. Fig. tis a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the adjusting-plate; and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the holding-ring, which lies under the end of the adj Listing-plate and by engaging the same prevents it from swinging.
The same reference-letters designate the same parts in all the figures.
A designates the heel ring or band, which encircles the butt of the snath B.
O designates an eyebolt the stem of which passes through the band A and snath B, and the eye of which encircles and holds the tang of the scythe in the usual way.
D designates the adj usting socket-plate, with which the tang of the scythe engages, the plate being provided with holes cl d, into one or the other of which the bent end of the shank projects. The plate D has at its upper end, on the side which lies against the snath, an integral stud d, which projects into a hole in the snath and forms the pivot for the plate. A screw (1 passing th rough the plate and axially through the stud d and screwing into the snath, holds the plate and prevents it from falling off when the clamping-bolt is loosened or taken out. At its lower end the plate has a curved transverse slot (1 which receives the clamping-bolt c. This slot is described from the center of the pivot-pin (Z and its side walls incline outwardly-that is, the slot is wider at the outer face of the plate than at the inner, and the head of the clamping-bolt e is correspondingly shaped, so that it may lie entirely within the slot and be flush with the outer surface of the plate and exert its clamping action against the walls of the slot. This takes the head of the bolt out of the way of the tang of the scythe and allows the same to lie snugly against the plate D.
The heel-ring is formed with a lip or proj ection a, which is perforated for the passage of the clamping-bolt c. This lip serves as a washer for the nut of the clamping-bolt, and at the same time serves as a fastening to hold the ring on the snath. The eyebolt alone would securely hold the ring on, but being near the end of the snath it frequently happens that the latter becomes split and broken, and when this occurs the eyebolt and ring are liable to drop off together. The lip and clamping-bolt thus form an additional fastening to hold the ring on, and also form a connection with the adjusting-plate D, so that all the parts are connected together.
By forming the plate D with the integral pin d the number of parts is reduced and the necessity for boring the snaththrough and thereby weakening it is avoided, since it is only necessary to bore the hole deep enough to receive the pin (1, which is quite short.
In order to provide for the more secure holding of the plate D in adjusted position, I form the plate with holding-teeth d at both sides of the slot (Z to engage similar teeth 6 on a holding-plate E, which is set into the snath under the swinging end of the plate D. The plate E is a circular plate with a central opening to receive the clamping-b0lt e, and has upon each side, opposite each other, holding-tceth e and e. The teeth 011 the under side of the plate are pressed into the wood and prevent the plate from turning, while those on the upper side engage with the teeth d on the plate to prevent the latter from moving or swinging.
Having now described my invention, I clain1- 1. The heel ring or band A, formed with a projecting lip a at its upper side, in combination with the swinging socket-plate D, pivoted on the under side, and clamping-bolt e, the said clamping-bolt passing through said lip a and through the swinging end of the socketplate to connect said parts, whereby both the head and nut of said bolt are provided with metallic bearings,substantially as shown and described.
2. The heel-ring A, formed with a projecting lip a at its upperside, in combination with the swinging soel et-plate D, pivoted at its upper end to the snath and having at its swinging end a transverse segmental slot, and with the clamping-bolt e, the said bolt passing,
through the socket-plate and through the lip a and serving to connect said parts and clamp and hold them to the snath, substantially as shown and described.
The combination of the heel ring A, formed with a projecting lip a at its upper side, a swinging socket-plate D, pivoted at its upper end to the under side of the snath and having at its lower end a transverse segmental slot (1 and holding-teeth d", a holding-plate E, set into the snath and having teeth 6 to engage the teeth of the socket-plate, and a clamping-bolt e, passing through said lip a and through the segmental slot of the socketplate to clamp and hold said parts to the snath, substantially as shown and described.
