BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,919, dated July 30, 1889.

To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM BLUM, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Buckle, of which the following is a full, clear,- and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide an improved buckle, in which the tongue is positively locked against the buckle-frame.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.

- Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved buckle, showing it applied to astrap and in its locked position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the buckle and its key, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line 00 0c of Fig. 2, and Fig. i is a side view of the locking-bar detached.

The buckle-frame A is formed with its front bar a made hollow and notched ate for the entrance of the end or point of the buckletongue B,which latter is, as usual, pivoted to the buckle-frame to swing against the front bar a. ithin the angular bore of the bar a is fitted the spring-actuated locking-bar O, which is formed angular at its inner end a to prevent its turning, and is rounded at its outer end 0' to enable it to be provided with threads 0 the said threaded end being adapted to receive the internally-threaded key D, for partly withdrawing the said locking-bar against the tension of its spring.

The spring 0 of the locking-bar C abuts at its inner end against the enlargement c and at its outer end against a ring or washer E, that is secured to the bar a at its open end and serves to retain the locking-bar and its spring in place.

The bar 0 is formed with a notch 0 a longitudinal slot 0 extending from the bottom of said notch for locking the tongue, as follows: The key D when screwed onto the locking-bar moves the said bar outward to bring its notch 0 into register with the notch a of the bar a, and upon the key being removed from'said locking-bar the spring 0' moves the latter inward, and thus moves its notched portion 0 out of register with the notch a, and prevents the withdrawal of the tongue.

To unlock the buckle, the key is screwed onto the locking-bar until the notch 0 thereof is brought into register with the notch a, whereupon the tongue may be freely swung away from the bar c.

Having thus described my invention, I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, in a buckle, of the buckle-frame provided with a pivoted tongue and having the front bar thereof made hollow, the spring-actuated locking-bar longitudinally movable in said bar, and formed with a longitudinal slot and with a notch or recess leading to said slot, for allowing entrance of the buckle-tongue, substantially as described.

2. In a buckle, the combination, with the buckle-frame having its front bar made hollow and its tongue pivoted to swing against said hollow bar, the latter having a notch for receiving the point of the tongue, of the longitudinally-movable spring-actuated lockingbar fitted in said hollow bar and having a round threaded endand made angular in crosssection for a portion of its length, and formed also with a longitudinal slot and a notch or recess leading to said slot and allowing en-
