UNITE STATES ARTHUR R. \VALLER, OF KINGSLAND, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO BURGER & LEE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y/
UTILITY PACKAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,910, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed March 25, 1889. Serial No. 304,663. (ModeL) T0 at whom, it m/ay concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR R. VVALLER, of Kingsland, in the township of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Utility Packages; and the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to what is known as utility packagesthat is to say, a package in which articles of merchandise are placed and exposed for sale, and which package after the contents have been removed for use is adapted for other purposes.
My improvement relates to a utility package that is in the form of a book and which is composed of sheet metal, the outer surface of which package is lacquered upon the concave edge and ends and lacquered and embossed upon the sides and back, one side being hinged to the back as a cover and constructed so that it will engage with the edge of the concave surface, and the ends are made with a tang of metal, which in the construc tion is joined to the concave portion, so as to prevent any tearing or parting of the adja cent edges of metal.
In'the drawings, Figure 1 represents by a perspective view my improved utility package in the form of a book. Fig. 2 is a crosssection of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan showing the manner of joining the edges; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the same, showing the inner surface of the angle, the parts being separated.
My improved utility package is made of sheet metal in the form of a book, in which a represents the ends, I) the concave edge, 0 c the covers, and d the back, the cover 0 being hinged to the back (Z along one edge at c, the ends a, the edge I), the back (1, and the side 0 being rigidly secured together to form a receptacle for articles of merchandise to be placed in for exhibition and sale and delivcry. The sheet metal of which the ends a and the concave portion 1) are composed is lacquered in plain color upon the sheets before the same are cut up to form the portions just named, and the sheet metal composing the sides 0 c and the back d when in sheet form are lacquered in plain color and embossed in any suitable design before said sheet metal is cut up into the form to make the sides and back. I have represented the ornament or embossing of the sides and back as a hexagonal figure, the shading of a portion illustrating that the center of the figure is depressed.
The edge of the cover 0 is turned over, as shown at f, Fig. 2, so as to pass outside of the upper edge I) of the concave surface I) when the cover is closed, this serving to hold the cover in place when closed. Theends a are so cut as to leave a strip of metal or tang h projecting from the curved edge where the same is joined with the ends of the concave portion 1), and this tang is bent at right an: gles to the ends a and is passed beneath the turned-over edge of the portion 12, and when the parts are soldered together along the j oining edgethis tang strengthens the union of the parts, so that they are not as liable to part as if they were only held by a soldered joint.
My improved utility package in the form of a book is an ornamental and desirable article of manufacture in which to display for sale articles of merchandise, and which package is serviceable after the goods have been removed as a receptacle for other things and as a lunch-box for school-children, students, and clerks.
I claim as my invention As a new article of manufacture, a utility package in the form of a book with embossed sides and back and lacquered surfaces, one side 0 forming alid hinged ateto the back and having a turned-over clamping-edge f, and
- the ends a, having tangs at h, adapted to be secured to the concave portion to strengthen the union of the edges at the angles, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 21stday of March, A. D. 1889.
A. R. XVALLER. Vitnesses:
Gno. T. PINOKNEY, HAROLD SERRELL.
