Description

'To all vwho-mf t mag/:concern:
FOWLER, of
. VWILLIAM 'n.'roWLEa or ANNE ARUNDEL'COUNTY, MARYLAND.
' A PAlllvT OFFICE.'
lmet-roven suisses-Lune FAN.
. Speciiicationj'orming. pai-tof 'Letters Patent No.v 40,746, daied'D'ecember l, 18.63.
-Be it known'that I, WM. B. Anne Arundel county, inthe State-.of Maryland, have invented certain' new and useful improvements in machines vfor expelling iiies from tables; and I hereby declare that the following is atrue and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to they accompanying drawings, fand to the letters ofreference marked thereon.
y The nature of myl invention consists in the vuse of certaindevices pnt in motion by clockwork for 'expelling flies from a common-size family dining-table', inthe manner hereinafter described.
l Figure I is a plan view ,ofy my machine..
, Fig. IIin .theannexeddrawings represents a vertical section ot'l the same with the fans in position. Fig. lll represents a plan-view of the fans.
A in Fig. II represents a vertical section.
oft he case which contains the clock-work, and can be made either square or cylindrical, plain or ornate, to suit the taste.
B represents the arbor of the clock-movement, to the upper end ot' which the .forked rod E is fastened by means of a pin.
rIlhe stem F, which is firmly attached to the top of case A, has a hole passing vertically through itscenten vInto this'hole the rod E is'insertedv and extends about an-'in'ch above the top of stem F. 'Ihe upper end'of the rod E is kept in place by passing through a holein a'metal plate at the top ot' stein F. The
upper end oflrod E is 'made square and is insertedin a socket in the shaft G, being' held' firmly inits position by the 'thumb-screw d.
'ficieritl y far through sleeve M to afford a rest erable for this purpose.
'for the purpose herein for the handles of the fans-Kwhenoccupyng vtheir .respective positionsin the. heads of said v the wire rim of lthe fans K is fastened by a wrapping of fine wire.v g has a hole length wise through it, into which the upper ,end fot' v handle I enters.` The screw n is inserted in the end of I when it is embraced by knob g,
'which,'by being screwed'down','enlarges the Aend of I, and keeps the knob g iirmlyin position. N represents a sliding stop, w hich, by being forced in, arrests the motion of the rod E and the parts attached to it.
Ittwill be' observed that the fans K are so place'dfthat in revolving around the axes of motionl their edges, and not their broad sides, are presented to the air, and thus meet with the least'po'ssible resistance. Owing to this movement, the fans can be constructed ofthe lightestjmarterial,I thin dark paper being,r pref- -The advantage which I claim for my machine consists notv singly in expelling iiies fromthe'ta'ble during meals, but also tirom `the length of time which it runs after being' `wound up) in its'utility in protecting children when 'asleep and the sick when confined to theirbeds from .the annoyance vof flies and mosquitoes-aan ofce that otherwise would have to be performed by the constant assiduity of a nurse.
The machine runs about an hourand a half'.
"Having thus described my machine, what I claim, and desire to secure' by Letters Patent,
isi i The sleeve M, rods I I, thumbserews n n, and revolving shaft Gr, when the whole shall be constructed, arranged, andoperatedas and described. l
WM. R. FOWLER.
