ABRADlNG-COVERING FOR BUFFERS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,248, dated July 16, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, ANDREW W. ROGERS, of Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Abrading-Coverings for the Foot of a Buffer; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention, hereinafter described, consists of an improved abrading-covering for the foot of a buffer used to finish the surfaces of boot and shoe soles. It is designed to'be used 011 the form of foot described in an application filed by me in the United States Patent Office of even date herewith, having the Serial No. 292,924, and it is intended to be used in the place of the covering shown in said application.

The object of the invention is to provide a cheap covering and one also which may be formed with two abrading-surfaces, so that it may be reversed when one is worn out.

The invention consists in forming the projections by which the covering is attached to the foot out of material of the covering itself, and, second, of a double-faced covering having the projections so formed.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 shows a central vertical section of the buffer, all the parts of which, excepting the covering for the face of the foot, are made as explained in my said application. Fig. 2 shows, in face view, the covering. Fig. 3 shows a double-faced covering in section. Fig. i represents, in plan view, the covering, showing the tongues or connections cut in a peripheral or circumferential direction.

The foot is indicated at A, the face of the holder at B, the clamp at O, and the spindle at D. The covering E is made of cloth, paper, or like material, in sheets, and has its working-face covered with abrading material. The projections e are in the form of narrow tongues cut out of the material of the covering and turned up away from the workingface. Their point of attachment, therefore, is within the margin of the covering and they are adapted to enter holes or notches in the 50 foot. With this form of projection a doublefaced covering may be used. This is shown in Fig.3. The covering may be made in concavo-convex form as usual. The material of which it is made will permit it to be sprung into reverse position for turning it inside out upon the foot In this the tongues e are pushed through to the opposite side when the covering is reversed with the same effect.

I have shown the tongues as cut radially, but they may be cut in any other direction, and it may be desirable rather to cutthem in a peripheral or circumferential direction, as shown in Fig. 2 at c, in order to bring the margins left in the covering in the line of the movement of rotation of the instrument and as broadly claimed in my pending application, Serial No. 292,924. In this case the holes or notches in the foot are changed in position to correspond.

I do not claim herein the intermediatelyset connections, nor a double-faced covering, broadly, that being the subject of an application filed by me in the United States Patent Office of even date herewith, Serial No. 292,925.

I claim- 1. An abrading-covering for the foot of a buffer, having projections by which it is attached, formed of tongues cut out from the material of the covering within the margin 80 thereof, substantially as described.

2. A reversible abrading-covering having the abrading surfaces with the projecting connections by which it is attached formed of I tongues cut out of the material of the cover- 8 5 ing itself within the margin thereof, substantially as described.

3. An abrading-covering for the foot of a buffer,havingprojectingconnectionsby which it is attached formed of tongues cut circumo ferentially out of the material of the covering itself, whereby the connection is less liable to be torn from the body of the covering, substantially as described.
