UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES F. POIVELL, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
DEVICE TO PREVENT INTERFERENCE OF HORSES FEET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,113, dated July 16, 1889.
Application filed April 22, 1889.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. POWELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Ilennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for the Prevention of Interference of Horses Feet, Ankles, or Legs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to devices for the prevention of interference of horses feet; and the objects of my improvement are to provide a simple and inexpensive device to cause a horse to keep its feet sufficiently apart while traveling, so that neither one of its hind feet or ankles will become bruised or abraded by the other, and the horse to which it may be applied will soon be cured of this defect. I attain these objects by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents the rear portion of a horse having the interferenee-preventing device attached to the inner side of the breeching thereof. Fig. 2 represents a perspective View of the interferin g-preventin g device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal horizontal section of the same.
The device consists of two slightly-tapering strips or tongues A of springy metal having their widest rear ends soldered or otherwise suitably united at a to a rear plate B, that has riveted thereto at 0, adjacent to its ends, two short straps O, each provided with a buckle 0 to secure the device rigidly 1:0 the inner side of the breeching (Z of the harness of a horse.
Serial No. 308,108. (No model.)
The narrower or front ends of the tongues A have attached thereto, by rivets a or other suitable means, a padding or cover A of wool or other suitable soft material, which when in use penetrates between the haunches of the horse, and said padding prevents irritation of said parts, while the outward springing of the tongues A produces a steady but not uncomfor-table pressure close to its body.
Although I prefer to secure the device to the breeching by means of straps and buckles, it is evident that it could be secured thereto by means of rivets or other suitable means, and in place of two tongues a single one properly padded may be used.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim- 1. In a harness attachment, the anti-interfering device consisting of strips or tongues of springy material having their front ends padded and their divergent rear ends secured to a plate, and means for securing the device to the breechin g of a harness, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a harness attachment, the combination of an anti-interfering device consisting of two springy tongues projecting forward from a rear plate uniting them, padding secured to their front ends, and straps secured to said rear plate, with the breeching of a harness, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I atlixmysignaturein presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES F. POWELL.
