Description

(No Model.) v
B. LARSEN.
HORSBBOOT.
No. 538,685. Patented May 7, 1895.-
UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
BIRGER LARSEN, OF PAULLINA, IOWA.
HORSE-BOOT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters-Patent No. 588,685, dated May '7, 1895.
Application filed February 26 1395. Serial No. 539,785. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, BIRGER LARsEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paullina, in the county of OBrien and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Boots, which are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part hereof, and in which- Figure l shows my said improved horseboot in perspective, as .seen from the rear. Fig. 2 shows its top part in sectional view, taken near its top and transversely to its length.
Like letters refer to like parts.
The object of my invention is to provide a horse-boot wherewith the pastern joint may be protected on its rear side against injury from wire fences. As is well known, horses often put their fore feet through such fences and then are caught on the wire, at the pastern joint the resultbeiug that the horse makes great effort to be released and thereby injures himself more or less, at times so seriously as to be unfit for use for a long time and at times never recovers from such injury. To obviate such serious difficulties I provide my said new horse-boot, constructed in substantially the following manner, namely:
Iprovide a hoof-band, c, of stoutleather and provide its front with straps and buckles, g, and on the rear thereof attach a cylindrically convexed piece of metal, b, which covers the pastern-joint and which may extend more or less above it and is provided at its side edges, at its upper end, with ears, z', having vertical slots, d. Through said slots pass pins, d', which play freely in said slots, and are xed into the arms, a, which project down from aband f, and pass by said ears. A large head on said pin prevents said parts from springing apart. Said band,f, is made to fit the sides of the leg, which are quitefiat above the pastern joint, and may be provided with an exterior covering, h, as leather, or padding and provided with one or more straps and buckles g. When said band fts theleg it is of V-shaped form in plan, as shown in Fig. 2. Through said construction my said device is kept in its place and prevented from turning axially, or, so as to allow the plate, b, to come to the side or front of the leg. In Fig. 2 the band,f, is shown covered with a padding h. The slots, d, allow the necessary vertical motion which results from the action of the foot in walking and thus prevent the otherwise necessary inotion to the band, f, through which chafng and injury would result.
By the use of my said device a horse cannot get his fore foot caught and held so as to injure him.
l/Vhat I claim is- The combination with a hoof-band provided at its rear with a cylindrically and exteriorlyconvexed metal attachment extending above said hoof-band and provided at its sides and upper ends with vertically slotted ears, of a band of stiff material to lit the sides of the leg and a pair of arms from it extending downward and united to said ears by pins 7c.-
playing in said slots, substantially as specified BIRGER LARSEN.
