IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. I 79,265, dated J one 27, 1876; application filed December 11, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
-Be it known that I, DAVID S. GARRIGK, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Strip for Preventing Attrition from Harness-Saddles, of which the following is a specification 'My-invention relates to an attachment or appendage for the under side of harnesssaddles, intended to relieve the animals back from the severe attrition of the saddle;
and my device consists essentially of a'broad flat strap of leather, of the herein-represented or other suitable shape, whose ends being strapped or buckled fast to the saddle-flaps, only cause said appendage to bear upon and embrace the animals back or withers, and to allow the saddle to surge forward and backward or from side to side, without rubbing or galling the animal, with whose'back the saddle itself is, in fact, prevented from coming in contactf The aforesaid strip is arranged in such a manner as to be easily applied to any saddle, and when once properly secured in position, it readily accommodates itself to the animals back.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a harnesssaddle, with my improved strip applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the strip, and Fig. 3 is a plan of the same; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the strip applied to the harness-sad dle.
The strip consists of a broad strap or band of leather, A, of a-single thickness, and about eighteen or twenty-four inches long,,and from four to twelve inches wide at its midlength. The shape of this strip is more clearly shown in Fig. 3; and by referring to said illustration it will be noticed that the rear edge of the strip is slightly concaved at B, while its front edge 0 is made somewhat convex.
The dotted line running longitudinally of the strip in the illustration is the center or median line of the device, and it will be observed that the distance from this line to the front edge 0 is considerably greater than the distance from said line to the rear edge B. By imparting this peculiar shape to the strip it is caused to fit snugly upon the horses withers, and without irritating the animals back. The ends of the strip are rounded at D D, so as not to interfere with any part of the harness.
In order that the device may be readily applied to any saddle, the strip is slotted near its ends, as at E E, for the reception of straps F F, having perforations Gr G and buckles H H. These straps are long enough to pass around the flaps I I of a saddle, .J While the midlength oftlie strip is bent upwardly. so as to fit over the horses back, and without coming in contact with the saddle-arch. The strip then serves as a smooth and uniform bearing interposed between the saddle and the horses back, and consequently all friction is taken up by this strip and not imposed on the horse. Furthermore, said strip prevents the cushions of the saddle being defiled with perspiration from the animal. The strip being somewhat broader than the saddle the latter is free to have considerable play back and forth without galling the horse; and the strip is also effective in preventing any irritation that might be produced by the saddle shifting from side to side, the straps F F 7 serving as bearings to allow the play of saddle.
Any convenient form of retaining devices may be substituted for the straps and buckles herein specified. The strips may be made of various lengths and widths, so as to cover a greater or less portion of the horses back and sides. The precise shapeof strips may be made at will, as the gist of my invention consists in the detachable strap or band connected to the saddle or its flaps, and interposed between the saddle proper and the animals back.
I claim as my invention- The leather strip A, provided at each end with means for attachment to the saddle-flaps, in combination with a harness-saddle, whereby the saddle is permitted to move freely back and forth upon and over the strip, for the purpose described.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
DAVID S. GARRIOK. Attest:
