ADVERTISING DIRECTORY.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,648, dated November 1'7, 1863.

Be it known that I, B. F. STILWELL, of the city of San Francisco, in the State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement on `Advertising or Business Directories; and I do hereby declare that the following is av full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and marks thereon, the same forming a part of this specification, and showing by a front View or view in elevation a business directory with my improvement attached thereto.

As heretofore used, the business or advertisin g directory was made up of a frame or case, a, divided into sections or compartments b by the bars or division-plate c, there being to, the frame or case, or to each section, a back board or plate, and' a front glass plate or plates. In each of the sections a card or billhead or circular could be placed, and the directory thus made the means of advertising; for several individuals of various tradesand occupations.

My invention consists in attaching to business directories, eonstructed substantially as above recited, a small case or box, d, in which can be placed a numberof small pocketcards, so that any individual desiring to visit the place of business of the advertiser whose card is in the section to which a case, d, is attached may take out a pocket-card, and thus be saved the trouble of making a memorandum for his convenience.

Directories having my invention attached thereto may be made of any suitable material,

. and with any desired number of sections or compartments, and one or more of the cases d may be affixed to each section, asl 1n some instances the frame ay maybe without divis ions or sections and used by one business house only. My improvement may be attached to directories already in use. These cases for the pocket-cards may be connected with the frame or the division'bars thereof by anyconvenient means or devices, and they may be made of any metal or other substance or material that may be preferred, susceptible of being used for the purpose. Where the frame or division-bars are made of papier-mache', or

any plastic material, the case or box d may be molded or formed with such frame or bars, and,'as is evident, the directory when complete may be plain or ornamented, as may be deemed best. When the directory is placed in a hotel or on board of a steamer or other passenger vessel, such arrangements can be made as will keep the card-cases supplied with cards, and thus the directory be made to B. F. STILWELL.
