UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LESLIE HElVITT, OF BUFFALO, NEWV YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PRATT & LETOHl/VORTH, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED SNAP-HOOK AND LOOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,887, dated June 25, 1889.
Application filed December 18, 1888- Serial No. 293,996- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LESLIE HEWITT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Snap-Hook and Loop, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined snaphook and loop, and has the object to provide the snap-hook with a suitable loop, to which a strap may be detachably connected without sewing, so that the snap-hook can be readily removed from the strap when desired, and also to construct the loop in such a manner that the tongue to which the strap is attached will be relieved from a part of the strain.
My invention consists to that end of the improvements which will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved snaphook and loop attached to a strap. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof with the strap removed. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view thereof.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the snaphook, which may be of any well-known construction, and B is the loop, formed in one piece therewith. The frame of the loop is composed of side bars 0 0, cast on the shank a of the snap-hook A, and a rear cross-bar d, the enlarged rear portion of the shank of the snap-hoop constituting the front cross-bar of the loop. e is a curved tongue or hook formed centrally on the crossbar (Z on the upper side thereof, and project ing rearwardly therefrom.
f is a cross-bar connecting the side bars '0 c, and arranged at a short distance in rear of the adjacent end of the shank a, so as to form a space between said shank and the crossbar. Between the cross-bar f and the rear cross-bar d is arranged a cross-bar g, which is raised above the cross-bars d and f, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
it represents the strap, attached to the loop B, and provided near its ends with an opening which engages over the tongue e. From the tongue 6 the strap passes forwardly underneath and around the cross-bar f and thence rearwardly underneath the raised cross-barg and over the tongue or hook e. As the strap is looped around the depressed cross-bar f, the latter receives a part of the strain applied to the strap, thus largely relieving the tongue (2 and rendering the same less liable to be bent out of place or broken.
The strap is readily detached from the loop B by pushing the outer portion of the strap forwardly, so as to slacken the loop thereof, and then slipping the opening in the strap over the tongue 6 by pulling the end of the strap rearwardly. The strap is attached to the loop B by inserting the same between the rear cross-bar d and the raised cross-bar g, and then passing it through the space between the shank a and the cross-bar f and engaging its opening over the tongue 6.
The loop B can be readily cast complete with the shank of the hook, and forms a very convenient and ready means for attaching the snap-hook to the strap.
I claim as my invention- As an improved article of manufacture, the combined snap -hook and loop herein described, consisting of the hook A and the loop B, having side bars 0 0, extending rearwardly from the shank of the hook, a rear cross-bar (1, connecting the rear ends of the side bars, a curved tongue 6, formed on the upper side of said cross-bar and projecting rearwardly therefrom, a front cross-bar f, and a raised cross-bar 9, arranged between the front and rear cross-bars f and d, substantially as set forth.
lVitness my hand this 7th day of November, 1888.
LESLIE HEWITT.
