G. E. RAYMOND. MERCHANDISE BOX.
N0." 405,801. Patented June 25,4889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
GEORGE ED\VARD RAYMOND, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MERCHANDISE-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of I ietters Patent No. 405,801, dated June 25, 1889.
Application filed February 9, 1889. Serial No. 299,283. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE EDWARD RAY- MOND, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Merchandise-Boxes, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is directed to certain improvements in packing or merchandise boxes, having for its object to promote convenience and facility in discharging or removing the contents, especially in effecting the same in greater or less quantities, as occasion may require, and also to effect such removal of said contents as to avoid the accidental spilling or wasting thereof; and it consists of a packing or merchandise box having at a suitable point thereon, preferably at a corner edge, a sliding spout or chute combined with a hinged or pivoted flap, the two being pref erably connected by a spring-metal hook, as will be understood more fully from the following description and accompanying illustrations, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved merchandise or packing box or case on line x w of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof and Fig. 3 is a plan view with the box in the position in which it is held in discharging or removing its contents, with its spout and flap in projected position.
In the embodiment of my invention I provide a packing or merchandise box or case A, of ordinary construction, with a sliding spout or chute B, combining therewith a hinged or pivoted flap or coverB the two bein g preferably connected together-by a springmetal hook O. The spout or chute Bis preferably adapted for application to a corner edge of the box or case A, the same having the two sides of a triangle and fitted to slide upon the box or case. The inner edge of the spout or chute B has a turned-up or thickened portion a, or other convenient means for its ready manipulation.
The corner edge of the box or case A has in it a longitudinal slot Z), through which, by means of a stud 0, connection is effected between the spout or chute B and a slide or guide d on the inside of the case or box, said slide or guide fitting in the inner edge of the latter and secured to the stud c.
The flap or cover 13 is applied by hinges or pivots to the end of the box or case A at the upper edge of an opening e, previously formed in said end of box or case, said flap or cover standing diagonally to the general plane of the box or case. It is connected by a stout spring-metal hook or wire O to the slide or guide d in such a manner that as the spout or chute B is projected or slid outward, as is practiced just before and when it is desired to discharge the contents of the box or case, the flap or cover B will simultaneously swing outward or be deflected at an angle to the box, and thus uncover the discharging opening or outlet of the box or case. This movement of the flap B is due to the action of the springmetal hook or wire O, carried by the spout or chute as it is slid or moved out. On the other hand, as the spout or chute is oppositely slid or moved the flap or cover will be thrown down, so as to cover simultaneously the discharge opening or outlet with the retraction or said movement of the spout or chute, the hook O pulling inward upon the flap or cover as it (the hook) is drawn backward by the movement of the spout or chute, the flanges of the flap at its outer edges snugly and tightly fitting upon the coincident edges of the case or box. The closing of the discharge opening or outlet is thus effected in a substantially air-tight manner, preventing the evaporation of the contents or the strength of the contents of the case or box. Besides, the flap or cover B serves as a guard, the same resting upon the outer edge of the spout or chute, when the latteris projected, to prevent the accidental spilling or wasting of the contents of the box or case as they are being discharged.
This inventiomit will also be seen, permits of the convenient and ready removal or discharge of the contents of the case or box, es pecially in effecting the same in greater or less quantities as may be required and as practiced in stores, as well as in the household, while it also serves as a cover to the box or case, as well as a spout or chute.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Wire, and a'slide arranged upon the inside of Patent, is i the box or case and'having connection with 1. The packing or merchandise box or case said spout or chute bya stud passed through I 5 having the sliding spout or chute, combined a slot in the casing or boX, substantially as 5 with the pivoted or hinged flap or cover, the specified.
