Nrrnn STATES i ATENT @Frieso IMPROVED BURGLAR-'ALARNL Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,469, dated November 3, 1863; autcdated October 25, 1863.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be itknown that I, MELvIN A. GENUNG, of the town of Granville, and county of Licking, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Burglar Alarm; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, making a part of this spec, ilication, in which- Figure lis a perspective view; Fig. 2, a transverse section; Fig. 3, details.
To enable othersskilled-in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation by reference to the several parts by the letters designated on the annexed drawings.
A is the alarm; B, arm secured to the vergepost for the purpose of holding the connection which is secured to the attachment; C, loops or chain for the purpose cf lengthening or shortening the connection; I), hook used in connecting with C; E, cord to connect with attachment F, G, or H; I, a tubular plate set in the sash or door casing to admit the hook or pin on F, G, or H; J, the same as I, to be secured to the side oi' sash for the purpose of hooking the attachment F into when the sash is partially lowered or raised; K, pin secured to the attachment F, to be used when the lower sash is partially raised, when it is put in the tubular plate at L, when, the sash being raised beyond the cord M, the attachment F isrelieved, causing the alarm to operate; N, sash; O, parting-strip; P, inside stop. Vhen the upper sash is lowered or the lower sash is raised, the attachment flies out of the plate I at Q. The same effect will be produced when the upper sash is lowered to use the plate J. G is an attachment used for doors opening toward themselves; R, section of door; S, section of door casing; H, clamp attachment used for door opening from itself; T, end of door style and rail, showing the position H is in when in use. When the door is opened, the attachment drops down and relieves the alarm. U is the top of door-jamb, showing how the attachment is used for the purpose of keeping the alarm from running down when not in use; V, bridge for the purpose of supporting the bell; X, section of bell on the bridge, showing the hole W in the same for the purpose of winding up the alarm; Y Z, position of the feet of bridge on base of alarm and bell rim.
The nature of myinvention consists in providing attachments for doors and windows, in connection with the alarm of the bell, so that on opening the door three-eights of an inch or hoisting the lower sash or lowering the upper sash the same distance the alarm will be enabled to go off, causing rapid strokes upon the bell. The gong-shaped bell is used similar vto the Genuug patent of June 17, 1862. Ihe Valarm can be placed at will either on the jamb, casing, or door.
Bridge V, attachment G, and plate I are substantially different from bridge-hinge Q or attachment WV and pin Z in the Genung patent of June 17,1862, as fully described and set forth.
What I claim is- 1. The combination of the bridge with the alarm and bell and hole WV in bell, for the purpose of winding up the alarm, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the attachments F, G, and H, with pin K, and plates I and J, and hooks D, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
