APPLIANCE FOR SICK-BEDS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,681, dated June 4, 1889.

To all whom it may concern-.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE S. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Appliance for a Sick-Bed; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,'such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to the attachment of convenient articles to a bedstead or other article of furniture; and it consists of a clamp carrying several utensils, and means for their attachment and adjustment, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is an end view as regards the table, showing the device as seen from the side of the bed. Fig. 2 is a View of the side of the table, showing about the same details as are shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the arm F and the head G. The figures above described are partly in section to better show the details. of the table, showing the rods by which they are supported and the clips by which the table is attached to them. Fig. 5 is an end view of the table, showing it tilted in a position to be used for a reading-table or writing-desk, the part k being in a level position. Fig. 6 is a detail View, partly in section, of the arm B and cuspidor P.

In the figures like reference-marks indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

A is the clamp having the adjustable part a to adapt it to use on objects of different vertical breadths-for instance, the side rail of a bedstead or the frame of achair. At the top of the clamp is a vertical hole for the attachment of the pivoting-journal b of the arm B. The arm B has a vertical hole in its outer end, Fig. 1, through which passes the standards D. The height of the standardD is regulated by the worm E and rack (Z through the intervening gear 6, the worm being provided with a hand-wheel, as shown, or acrank for that purpose. The standard D is prefer- Fig. 4: is a View of the under side ably hollow for its entire length, but is necessarily so at the top end, as it carries the pivoting-journal f of the arm F. The outer-end of the arm F is provided with radial dentations, and the face of the boss 9 on the head G is provided with corresponding dentations. (Best shown in Fig. 5.) These dentations are for the purpose of holding the head G at any angle to the horizon, and they should be as many in number as will allow the required adjustments to be made. For the purpose of attaching the head G to the arm F, the stud g on the head G passes through the arm F, as shown, and has a nut on its outer end. On the loosening of the nut on the stud g the spring f, one end of which rests against the head G, will force the head G out and cause the disengagement of the dentated surfaces. The rods H are parallel and extend in a horizontal direction from the head G. The table K has attached to its bottom the clips J; or it may have continuous tubes or sleeves, through which pass the rods H. A portion 7a of one side of the table K is attached by hinges, and is held in position by the slotted strap M, attached to the main part of the table, and the screw m in the part 70.

The lamp N, or basket therefor, is supported by a downwardly-projecting stem 71, resting in a socket in the top of the arm F, as shown best in Figs. 1 and 2, and the cuspidor P, or basket therefor, is removably attached to the arm B by inserting the downwardlyprojecting stem 1) into an aperture in that arm, preferably formed by making the pivoting-journal of the arm hollow, as shown in Fig. 2.

The operation of this device is as follows: The clamp A being attached to the side rail of a bedstead, the table may be swung and adjusted in any desired height by means of the rack and worm gearing, and will swing horizontally around its pivoting-journal in the standard. The arm B may be swung outwardly and to the point opposite to that shown in Fig. 1, which will change the position of the standard around which the table swings. These adjustments will allow the table to be placed in any position that might be required.

The table K may be drawn partially off of the rods, it being only necessary that twoof ICO the clips J be around each rod, and itmay be tilted, as shown in Fig. 5, by loosening thenut on the stud g and turning it to the desired position, after which the nut should be tightened to bring the face of the boss on the head G into engagement with the end of the arm 1*. When the table is tilted, the part 7; may be brought to a horizontal position, and be there secured by the screws on. The position last described is that in which it would be usually used as a writing-desk, the part 71; being used to hold the necessary articles for that purpose.

lVhen it is necessary to turn the table around to adapt it to be used as a desk, it is drawn off of the rods II, and put 011 again after being reversed in such a manner that after being returned to its place the other end is toward the head G. The table may, in either position, be partially withdrawn, thus making the table extend farther over the bed. It's lateral position to the bed may be also somewhat changed by swinging the arm 13,

and its longitudinal position may be thereby changed to the cxtentof the iulllength of that arm.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

In an apparatus for sick-beds, the combinw tion of the clamp attached to the side rail of the bedstead, the standards 1'), carried by said clamp and provided with a rack and worm gear for raising and lowering the same, the spring-actuated clutch consisting of the arm F, provided with dentations, and the head G, having corresponding d entations, and the stud g, the table K, having a hinged part 7a, the strap M, and screw on, for adjusting said hinged part of the table, all arranged to secure said table at any desired inclination, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
