STAMP-CANCELER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 404,574, dated June 4, 1889.

Application filed April 4, 1888. Serial No. 269,595. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN SUMMERS, of Petersburg, in the county of Huntingdon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Stamp-Canceler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. V

, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my new and improved stamp-canceler. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken on the line 0000 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 isa plan view of the bottom of the canceler, and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional elevation taken on the line y y of Fig. 1.

The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.

A represents a plate, to whichare attached blocks B B, formed with teeth for cutting and defacing the surface of the stamps. Opposite the blocksB B is the pad 0, provided with lettering and date at its lower surface to apply the post-mark to letters and other mail-matter. The lower surface of the plate A is formed at one end with the cheek-pieces A A, to receive and hold the blocks B B, and the said plate is formed at its upper surface with the tube A which contains the rod E, to which the handle D is applied. The rod E is loose in the tube A and its lower end is pivoted to a triangular tumbler F, pivoted on the stud a, attached to the projection G of the plate A. The block B is attached by pivot Z) to the tumbler F above its pivot to, while the block B is attached by pivot Z) to said tumbler below the pivot to, so that a downthrust of the rod E, turning tumbler F, will impart opposite horizontal movement to the blocks B B. The teeth of the block B are slanted inward, while the teeth of the block B are slanted outward, so that the opposite movement of the two blocks'very effectively cuts and defaces the stamps beyond all restoration.

The blocks B B may be held in the cheekpieces A A in any suitable manner to permit opposite movement; but for this purpose I prefer to construct the block B to carry the block B, and to connect the block B to the cheek-piecesA bymeans of tonguc-and-groove ways cc. (Shown clearly in Fig. 4.) The block 5 5 B is grooved, as shown at (Z, to form three plates d, and the slots are enlarged to form the offsets 2', as shown clearly in Fig. 4. The block Bis centrally slotted to form the plates f f, which span the central plate (1 and are formed with flanges .e to engage with shoulders i for connecting the block B to theblock B.

The rod E is provided at its upper end with the sleeve H, held by the nut h screwed upon the rod. Between the upper end of the tube A and the said sleeve H is placed the coiled spring J, which acts to lift the rod E and all parts connected therewith after the rod has been depressed bypressure upon the handle D.

The handle D fits over the rod E, sleeve H, spring" J, and upper end of the tube A like a sleeve and incloses the same, and it is held to the upper end of the rod E by means of the nutj. (Shown clearly in Fig. 2.)

As above described, the rod E is loose in the tube A and is of less diameter than the internal measurement of the tube, as shown in Fig. 2, so that when forced down by pressure on the handle it will yield to accommodate or conform to the are described by the connection of the said rod to the tumbler when the latter turns on its central pivot.

Having thus described my invention; what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The stamp-canceler comprising a main cheek-pieces, in combination with a tumbl a rod connected thereto, and blocks held" etween the cheek-pieces in ways and connected to the tumbler, whereby the downthrust of the handle will movethe said blocks in a straight line between the cheek-pieces, substantially as described.
