HOSE-BAND PLIERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,732, dated December 26, 1893.
Application filed January 13, 1893- Serial No. 458,249- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, CHARLES F. I'IALSTEAD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of La Crosse, in the county of La Crosse and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hose-Band Pliers, of which the following is a description.
This invention relates to an improvement in hose-band pliers, and is designed as an improvement upon a device of the same character for which Letters Patent were granted September 16, 1890, No. 436,706.
The present invention has nothing to do with the pliers proper, but to the peculiar manner in which the two levers are connected. In the patent above referred to the levers are connected by means of a pivot-pin passing through the ears of one lever and the lug of the other, as with pliers of the ordinary construction. It is the object of the present invention to simplify and render the manufacture of the pliers cheaper, by dispensing with the pivot-pin entirely, and constructing the ears and the lug in such a manner that the two levers will be held to gcther by the frictional contact of those parts.
IVith these objects in view the invention consists broadly of a pair of pliers consisting of two levers provided with suitable jaws, one of which levers carries two ears having an approximately dove-tail recess between them and the other lever having an approximately dove-tail shaped lug adapted to lit and work between the said ears.
The invention further consists in the various novel details of construction of a pair of hose-band pliers, as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1, is a perspective view of the pliers as they appear when ready for use. Fig. 2, is a transverse vertical sectional view through the lug and ears, showing the peculiar configuration of the same.
Referring to the drawings, 1, designates one of the levers, which is provided at its outer end with a plurality of recesses 2 designed to engage with the wire of the band when the same is being placed in position around the hose. As this forms no part of the present invention a detailed description is deemed unnecessary. The lever is provided on one side with two cars 3, which are by preference semi-circular in form, and between the ears is a space 4 which is of an approximately dovetail form, the narrowest portion being at the free ends of the ears. The other lever 5, is provided with a hooked end 6 for engaging the band-wire, and with a lug 7 which is adapted to fit and work between the ears 3, the said lug being also of an approximately dove-tail shape, as will be clearly seen by reference to Fig. 2. The levers may be made of any desired material, but preferably of cast steel, and require no further finishing than that necessary to remove the rough surface left by the moldingsand. In assembling the parts, the lug is slipped between the ears, thus bringing the two levers into operative relation with each other. If desired, after the parts are assembled pressure may be brought to bear upon the cars so as to cause them to embrace the lug with sufficient force to prevent their accidental separation, the resiliency of the metal permitting the ears to yield to lateral pressure and thus allow the lug to work between them when the pliers are opened or closed.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that these pliers may be constructed at a slight cost, as compared with the ordinary pliers in which the parts are held together by means of a pivot-pin. It is to be understood that I do notlimit this invention to hose-band pliers alone, as the same principle may be employed with other forms of pliers.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a pair of hose-pliers, the combination with a lever provided on one face with a dovetail recess of a second lever having a dovetail lug engaging the. recess.
2. In a pair of hose-pliers, the combination with one of the levers provided on one side with semi-circular ears andadove-tail recess between the ears, of a second lever having a semi-circu1ar dove-tail shaped lug adapted to work between the said cars.
